Learn to Start DJ'ing with Virtual DJ

Thanks for visiting my blog.  This post will be part of an extensive tutorial for beginners about Virtual DJ, a software package for both windows and Macs, which is suitable for both beginning DJ’s and professional performances.  If you want to watch the videos for this series, instead of reading this blog post, the links to the six videos are near the bottom of this page.

You may wonder why I'm qualified to teach this, so I'll introduce myself.  I’m Jonathan Clark, also known online as DJ Bolivia, and I’ve been DJ’ing both as a hobby and professionally for over twenty years.  I've played shows on five different continents.  I have quite a few different video tutorials on YouTube, about everything from DJ’ing to music production to audio engineering tutorials, plus a lot of fun stuff like music videos, performances by other DJ’s, and stuff like that.  You can find an organized list of all those videos on my website at:  djbolivia.ca/videos

Let me be very up front about something right away, because a lot of “professional” DJ’s who learned to beat-mix on vinyl and CD’s can sometimes look down on DJ’ing with software on computers or mobile devices.  They might say that only amateurs would use Virtual DJ.  I understand that mindset:  I played on vinyl at clubs and at warehouse parties for about fifteen years before I even touched a pitch-controlled CD player, and even then, with some reluctance.  I felt the same reluctance before I did my first live show using Ableton Live software to perform.  But having recently started playing with Virtual DJ (just for the sake of this tutorial series), I’m seriously impressed with its capabilities.




The equipment that you use as a DJ is just a set of tools.  Ultimately, although your dance floor does appreciate the technical skills required to mix songs together seamlessly as you progress through your set, the most important part of your performance is your programming, which refers to the music that you pick.  In my experience, ninety percent of what a dance floor judges you on is your programming, and only ten percent on technical skills.  Let’s be clear here … you DO have to have good flow to your set, with no gaps between songs, no times when two songs are playing simultaneously and clashing badly, and a consistent beat as you flow from song to song.  And you need to make sure you have a consistent volume as you flow through your set.  That’s what your DJ'ing tools help you with, and it doesn’t matter if you have turntables, CD players, or DJ’ing software.  After you control those things, what’s most important is the music itself.

Don’t get me wrong - I’m not against learning the skills of beat-mixing on traditional equipment.  In fact, if you want to become a professional or even a semi-professional DJ someday, then I highly recommend that you DO eventually learn to beat-mix on CD’s player or turntables, or both.  However, I feel that most people reading this post and watching these videos are probably DJ’s who are just getting started.  If you’re in this “beginner DJ” category, you’re probably not going to be getting booked to play festivals or major clubs for a while.  You should assume that you’re going to have to devote some time at home to practicing the basics before you play your first public event.  And assume that most of the first dozen or so public performances you do might be at house parties and for friends, before you get your first booking for a public gig with an audience that paid to be at the show.  I want you to realize that if you’re going to try to become a professional DJ someday, then absolutely yes, you want to think about beat-mixing on CD players or vinyl within a year or so.  But using DJ software is a great way to get introduced to performing in front of people, and takes away some of the pressure of the technical aspects, so you can focus on learning how to read a crowd, knowing how to get through the difficult task of performing when you don’t have anyone on the dance floor yet, and dealing with people hounding you for requests in a dimly lit and noisy environment when you’re trying to cue (queue) up the next song.

Having set the scene, let me emphasize that this post and videos are for BEGINNING DJ’s.  If you already have experience as a performing DJ, and you’re comfortable with computers, be aware that you can probably figure the program out pretty quickly on your own.  The pace of this video series will be too slow for you.  I’m going to assume that the audience here is beginners, and I’m going to take my time and explain everything as clearly as I can, and try not to make any assumptions.  If you’re an experienced DJ and you want to watch these videos anyway, to make sure you’re not overlooking anything, well … I thank you for your patience.

The videos to accompany this post consist of a four-part series.  The first video is basically saying exactly what this post is explaining, so if you read through this whole post, you can probably skip the first video.  I’ll describe what I’m attempting to teach, cover an overview of what the software can do, and I’ll wrap up with a quick demonstration of installation and licensing (installation/licensing is in the video only, not in this blog post).  In video #1, I’m basically just talking to the camera.

The next three videos are more technical.  They're not transcribed into this blog post, because they rely on visuals.  In those videos, you’ll be looking at screen captures most of the time.  Here’s what I covered:

          1 – Overview, comparison with other DJ software, installation
          2 – The console, controls, and the media browser
          3 – Basic mixing, using both mouse and controllers
          4 – Going through the settings and preferences

Above and beyond that, I have links to a couple of other videos.  At the moment, there's one video where I record a full episode of my weekly radio show (Subterranean Homesick Grooves) using just a simple Numark Mixtrack controller plus the keyboard and mouse, and a second video where I get a bit more fancy and use a full-fledged professional DJ mixer, the Allen & Heath Xone 4D, with integrated soundcard and controller panels.  I may add some more Virtual DJ performance videos in the future.

If you’re just starting out with DJ’ing, I’m going to try to keep things simple, but I’m going to have to make a few assumptions in these videos and assume that you know some of the basics already.  There may be parts where you’re confused about things that I’m talking about.  If you get to any point where you’re getting confused about what I’m explaining, I want you to pause the Virtual DJ video and do some side research.  I have a bunch of other videos already online that I think will teach you just about everything you need to know.  If you’re starting totally from scratch, you may need an entire weekend to watch them all, but they’ll give you a firm foundation about what you’re getting yourself into, before you learn exactly how to use Virtual DJ.  Basically, I have five other individual videos or sets of videos that will help you learn everything else you need to know.  Here’s what they are:

First, my DJ’ing for Beginners series is a set of four videos designed for complete beginners, which covers a complete overview of the basics of the DJ industry.  This series covers dozens of topics, including all of the following:  Different types of DJ’s, different ways to perform, equipment, vinyl vs CD vs digital, basic beat-mixing & turntablism, mixers, headphones, turntables, pitch control CD players, digital performance equipment, effects machines, controllers, amplifiers, speakers, subs, monitors, compressors, equalizers, lighting, microphones, licensing, programming, set flow, DJ software, Ableton Live, working with promoters, getting booked, demo mixes, producing your own remixes and original tracks, and more.

If you’ve never used a DJ mixer before, my UnderstandingAudio Mixers & DJ Mixers video will teach you about all the different parts and capabilities of a mixer, so when you first start using a real mixer, you won’t be intimidated by the dozens of knobs and faders and other controls.  Understanding this video will give you a very good understanding of how the Virtual DJ on-screen mixer works.

I have two videos about beat-mixing.  The first video is for CD’s and the second video is for turntables.  You only need to watch the first one, since that video is the one with all the theory you’ll need to know about counting beats, understanding phrasing, and knowing how to blend two songs together smoothly.  The same principles that I explain in that video are used in mixing within Virtual DJ, although the benefit is that Virtual DJ makes it much easier to match up the beats.

If you’re starting to use Virtual DJ at home, you may be doing all of your mixing with the keyboard and mouse.  That’s cool.  However, the one drawback with a mouse is that it only has one cursor, so you can only change one thing at a time.  That’s where a controller comes in.  A controller is a separate piece of physical equipment that you attach to your computer, and the controls on your controller can change settings on the laptop.  The two best things about a controller are that it’s very hands-on, and is more physically intuitive to use than a mouse.  You can also control more than one parameter at a time, because you have two hands.  While a controller isn’t necessary to use Virtual DJ, it’ll make your life a lot easier as a DJ.  There are hundreds of different types of controllers available these days, and my Using MIDI Controllers video will help you understand your options and how your controllers work with your computer.

Finally, I have a series about Mobile DJ’ing.  That seems somewhat unrelated to learning how to use Virtual DJ, but I know that after a month or so of practicing at home, you’re going to be really eager to perform in front of other people.  Playing for friends at house parties is a good start, but you may also be able to get some paid gigs, as you start gaining confidence.  I don’t think the two videos in my Mobile DJ'ing series are critical to learning about Virtual DJ, but I think they’ll be very important for you to watch during your first month after starting to use Virtual DJ.  These videos talk about things like types of events, vehicles, licensing, insurance, costs of gear, setting prices, accounting, marketing, contracts, deposits, competition, and a more detailed run-down of gear that you may need to bring with you to shows.


Why Use Virtual DJ?

Ok, let’s start to focus on the software.  Who is Virtual DJ good for?  Well, I’ve heard a lot of people say that it’s just designed for amateur DJ’s.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  I’ve seen DJ’s do excellent performances with Virtual DJ at very large shows.  I know DJ’s who are professional turntablists and excellent at beat-mixing, who use Virtual DJ as a legitimate tool.  I’ve seen Virtual DJ being used in hundreds of performances at house parties, weddings, university events, clubs, and festivals.  Unless you’re a top tier A-list DJ getting paid tens of thousands of dollars per gig, or a highly skilled turntablist, Virtual DJ is professional enough to meet your needs quite easily.  Don’t judge it as being amateur software.  It may have been so at the start, but it’s come a long, long way in the past couple years.  It’s used by professionals, but it’s still simple to use and has a very easy learning curve.

Virtual DJ competes in a space with a couple of other well-known programs, especially Serato and Traktor.  Let me see if I can give you a good comparison about the strengths of these three programs, although all three are great programs that will cover all the basics.

Virtual DJ is a great all-around program, and perhaps the easiest for a beginning DJ to use.  If I’m talking to someone who has never touched turntables or pitch controlled CD players before, and they’re interested in DJ’ing with digital DJ software for the first time, I’ll usually recommend Virtual DJ to them, at least ninety percent of the time.  Even though it’s an all-around program, it can handle more complex tasks like integrating with traditional direct-drive turntables using time-code vinyl.

Serato is a system that’s fairly similar to Virtual DJ.  The on-screen display is slightly different, but the basics are the same.  Serato was traditionally viewed as being more of a professional DJ’ing platform, but Virtual DJ has really closed that gap.  However, a couple places where Serato might still have a slight advantage would be in the quality of in-house effects, and in ease of communications with various pre-mapped industry controllers.  Also, if you’re a music producer and want to integrate elements from Ableton Live, or integrate live performance aspects, Serato is especially flexible.

Traktor is the final package of the “Big Three” digital DJ’ing platforms.  Quite a long time ago, there was a package called Final Scratch, put out by Native Instruments in a partnership with Stanton.  That was really the first time-code vinyl experiment to merge traditional turntables with digital music.  I had a Final Scratch system in the early 2000’s, and played with it a lot.  Around 2005, Native Instruments and Stanton parted ways, and eventually Native Instruments moved forward with Traktor.  Although Traktor basically has a lot of the same capabilities as Virtual DJ and Serato, its roots were in the time-code vinyl ecosphere.  Any DJ whose main talents and intended use tend towards integration of traditional turntables with your digital DJ software will probably gravitate toward using Traktor.

I'll eventually try to produce a series of videos about Serato, and another series of videos about Traktor (plus some advanced Virtual DJ tutorials).


Purchasing Options

Virtual DJ has a huge strength that other DJ’ing software packages don’t have:  If you’re a home user, using it without external controllers, it’s free.  Completely.  Forever.  That sounds too good to be true, but as long as you’re not using the software in a professional sense (ie. paid gigs), and you’re just using a basic computer system, you qualify.

Many DJ’s will want to move past that point, sooner or later.  If you start playing at paid shows, you’re supposed to upgrade to a professional license.  Is there any way for them to prevent you from using your home version at a paid show?  No, not really, although I’m pretty convinced that even though a lot of young DJ’s are perpetually broke, you’ll soon see the value in paying for a license.

The free home version does have one restriction that will affect some DJ’s.  It won’t work with any external controller unless you pay for software licensing in one of three ways.  Do you need an external controller?  No, you can do everything with a mouse and keyboard, although a controller is more convenient.  Naturally, a lot of people will want to start using controllers eventually, so you’ll probably want to pay for a license at some point.  This becomes almost a certainty once you start playing at paid gigs.  Even though you might feel that you want to try to save money by not buying a license, I recommend that you should get a license, and also step up your game by integrating a controller, to make it easier to perform.

Let’s assume that you’ve moved past the point where you can rely on the free home-user version.  You now have three options:  (1) Buy a per-controller license;  (2) Buy a full life-time license; or (3) Buy a monthly subscription license that expires 30 days after the start of your subscription, unless you set up a credit card to do automatic monthly renewals.

If you go with a per controller license, the cost depends on what controller you want to use.  Basically, the lower the retail value of the actual controller, the cheaper it probably is to license.  The cheapest controllers are $49 to license, and the most expensive can be as much as $199 USD.  Virtual DJ recognizes and has rates for just about every known controller produced anywhere in the world today.

If you start using more than one controller, your cost may start getting pretty high.  For example, I currently have six different controllers that I want to integrate with Virtual DJ, plus a seventh that I’m considering.  Most of these are between $99 and $199 apiece.  Here’s a list:




Whoa!  That’s super expensive.  But don’t worry, Virtual DJ has a deal for you.  If the cost of the different controllers that you want to use comes to more than $299, you can buy an all-inclusive Pro license which is good for all time, and lets you use ALL controllers with the software, with no restrictions.  Therefore, $299 is the absolute maximum cost to buy a full pro license for the Virtual DJ software.  When I have the $299 full pro license, I can use all seven of the controllers that I listed above, plus any other controller available on the market.

A final option, if you don’t have enough money to pay for your controller license or a full Pro license up front, is that you can pay for a monthly pro subscription.  It runs for 30 days from the time you start it, and you can keep renewing.  This subscription costs about $19 per month in USD.  I'm in Canada, and rather than bill in USD, they bill me $27.99 per month in Canadian dollars.  You can turn it off if you don’t use the software for a few months, then turn it back on when you need to use it again.  The best thing is that Virtual DJ keeps track of how much you’ve paid in monthly subscription fees.  If you eventually reach $299, they give you a full permanent pro license.  The monthly subscription is a good way of letting you test the software for a while with no restrictions, and it’s also a good way of financing the cost of the program if you can’t afford to pay for it up front.


Content Subscriptions

The final thing that I want to talk about, before we go into a run-through of setting up and installing the software, is content licenses.  A content license is different than your software license.  The software license, which I already talked about, is related to your permission to use the software professionally or with controllers.  A content license is completely separate, and it is NOT mandatory.  It’s just convenient for DJ’s who need a lot of music for their performances.

DJ’s can sometimes need hundreds of songs every month for their shows.  It can be extremely expensive to buy all this music outright, especially since you’ll sometimes play a particular song at only one show during your entire career.  This is a really prohibitive cost for anyone considering a career as a DJ.  So certain organizations have come up with a solution, and Virtual DJ implements what’s called a “Content Unlimited Subscription Plan.”

Virtual DJ has three separate Content Unlimited Subscription Plans, as follows:


If you subscribe to one of these plans, you’re allowed to download/stream content from the Content Unlimited organization for a full month, and have access to pretty much any music in the world.  The Audio Plan has literally millions of songs available in every genre, with tons of different remixes, and everything is in appropriate quality for you to play at a gig.  Obviously, the karaoke and video plans are different types of media, but the concept is the same.

Imagine that.  Ten dollars per month and you have legal access to a global catalogue of content, with absolutely no risk of running into copyright issues for playing music at public performances!  Well, depending on what country you’re in, you may technically need an annual performer’s license for your country, just for the right to earn money at public performances.  But this Content Unlimited Subscription through Virtual DJ ensures that you’re not going to get into trouble for the specific music that you’re playing.  What a time to be alive!  I can’t emphasize what a great deal this is for DJ’s, and many DJ’s won’t appreciate the challenges that myself and other DJ's had in building our music collections twenty years ago, before the internet and digital music even existed.  I won’t go into these plans in any more detail here, but if you need a broader selection of music, you can look at the details on the Virtual DJ website.


Installing the Virtual DJ Software

I’m not going to go through the steps required to install Virtual DJ in this blog post.  You should be able to figure it out, and get things up and running on your own.  If you need help, I did demonstrate the process of downloading and installing it onto a Windows system in the Part 1 Overview video.  Basically, the steps that you need to follow are:

1.       Set up a free account when you go to the Virtual DJ website.  You’ll need this if you eventually do any software or content licensing.
2.       Download and install the software on your computer.
3.       If you’re going to play professionally or use a controller, pay for one of the three types of licenses to get you up and running (monthly subscription, permanent pro license, or per-controller license).
4.    [Optional]  Start a Content Unlimited subscription, if you want to use one.


By the way, if you DON’T have one of the three software licenses that allow you to use a controller, you can still make the controller work temporarily in a basic “demo mode.”  When you connect your controller without a license, it’ll work for ten minutes before Virtual DJ shuts it off and reminds you that you need a license.  The only way around this is to reboot the software, which obviously can’t be done in the middle of a performance.  So if you want to make sure things are working properly at a public gig, I highly recommend that you just accept the fact right now that you’re going to want to buy a license.

Tour of the Console/Controls, Basic Mixing, & Settings/Preferences:

All of the rest of the stuff that I want to explain can’t be done very easily in a blog post.  So at this point, if you’re set up and ready to start learning how to use the software, I’d recommend you watch the following three videos:








Ok, that pretty much summarizes things.  At this point, you should have a pretty good idea of what Virtual DJ is all about, and how to mix music with it.  The best way to get better is to practice, so if you’re trying to prepare for your first gig, I’d recommend that you try to set aside 30-60 minutes per day to play with the system at home, until you’re completely comfortable with using it.

If you want a “hot tip” on how to become a better DJ, I recommend that you record some of your practice sets, and then sit back and listen to them with a critical ear.  Were the volumes consistent from track to track?  Did you avoid any dead air between songs?  Did the mixes sound smooth when you were transitioning from one song to another?  Did the “flow” of the set (your programming of music choices) seem logical, or were you jumping rapidly back and forth between genres?  Weak programming might clear your dance floor, so pay a lot of attention to that.

If you find the time to practice for about an hour a day on average, I don’t see why a new DJ wouldn’t be ready for a small public show in less than three months.  I’ve occasionally seen someone pull off their first show in just a few weeks, in an emergency, especially if they already knew a lot about the music that people would want to hear, and can practice for several hours each day during those few weeks.

I’m going to leave you with a couple of demonstration sets that I recorded.  These were a couple different episodes of my weekly tech-house and techno radio show, Subterranean Homesick Grooves.  For the first set, SHG 351, I used just the mouse and a Numark Mixtrack controller during my performance.  For the second set, SHG 352, I used an Allen & Heath Xone 4D mixer/controller.  I also have a popular Xone 4D Tutorial Video about how to use that mixer.

Free Cracked Copy of Microsoft Office?

As most people realize, I'm fairly handy with computers. Like a backyard mechanic who has a whole machine shop in his garage, I like to tinker with technology. Installing RAM and hard drives and tuning up operating systems is actually pretty easy if you've got any common sense, but it seems to scare people off the same way you might be scared to change an alternator in your truck (which incidentally, is also not very difficult). So I get a lot of requests for help with fixing laptops. And the biggest request that I get, about once a week, is whether or not I can give someone a copy of MicroSoft Office.

So to cut down on the number of requests, I thought I'd post a solution right here on my blog. No, I'm not giving out hacked copies of Office. It's a great program, and without a doubt, the combination of Word & Excel is the software suite that I've used more than any other software. By a factor of at least 10x. I think I first bought a copy in 1990 or 1991, running on a 286, when computer monitors were still monochrome and color printers were unheard of, and have upgraded constantly since then. I guess it helps that I'm a perpetual student, so I usually qualify for educational discounts on software.

Anyway, my solution for your quest for a versatile office suite is this: "Open Office."

Open Office is an open source software suite, promoted by Apache, often referred to as "OOo." OOo stands for "Open Office dot Org," not "Oracle's Open Office." Anyway, open source means that it is free. Free does not always mean lower quality. This software has been developed by a team of thousands of developers from around the world, working on it for over a decade, in order to provide a free office suite package to internet users everywhere. It has a significant (and growing) market share, and is available in over a hundred languages. And it is very compatible with most aspects of MicroSoft Office; at the very least, with everything that students would use it for.

OOo consists of a number of modules/programs, similar to MS Office. "Writer" is equivalent to MS Word. "Calc" is equivalent to Excel. "Impress" is equivalent to PowerPoint. "Base" is equivalent to Access. Well, they're not quite the same, but very similar. OOo handles all major file types, including export to PDF's, and has versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Seriously, why perpetuate the distribution of pirated software when you can get the equivalent for free? If you like MicroSoft Office, buy a copy. If you want to save money, use Open Office. More than a hundred million users can't be wrong.

Jamstix Software - Part 2 of 4 - Covering All the Basic Operations

This is the second in a series of four tutorials about the Jamstix drum track creation software.  However, before I go any further, I made massive updates to my website in early 2024.  All of my Jamstix info is available there too, and I'd recommend that you move over there, unless you like the format of my blog better.  The info on my website is more up-to-date.  Here's the link:






 



Jamstix is pretty amazing, as I have already said in the first video in this series.  After I'm done this series, I'll do a set of videos where I create two complete songs from scratch.  If you want to see the way I work, you'll be able to watch just as if you were sitting beside me at the computer.  But first, let's start to go into more depth with the software now that you know what it's all about.  We'll begin by taking a closer look at the Song Wizard.

The Song Builder

Ok, so when you first open Jamstix within your host, you'll see the "Song" section of the upper right side main menu.  On the left side, you'll see a ton of choices of "Quick Start" songs.  There's a lot of variety there, based on different music styles mixed with various drummer personalities.  Some examples:
- Twelve bar blues
- Disco track using "Chad" (probably Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers?)
- Generic jam sessions
- Jamcussion songs
- Motown using "Phil" (probably Phil Collins of Genesis)
- Reggae with Stewart (probably Stewart Copeland of The Police)
- Standard song
- Lots of others

Let me just interrupt my own train of thought for a second to mention Jamcussion.  It's not available in the most basic version of Jamstix, but it's in a lot of the other more comprehensive versions.  Basically, it's a percussion add-on.  Think of latin instruments, hand drums, etc., all the sort of rhythm section instruments that aren't part of a normal drum kit.  If you are using Jamcussion, it runs in conjunction with (but sort of as a separate unique identity to) the main drum kit.

On the right side of the Main Menu you'll see the Song Builder.  This lets you set the rules.  Start with laying out the structure in terms of parts.  Each part has a unique initial.  Here's a list:
- I = Intro
- V = Verse
- P = Prechorus
- C = Chorus
- B = Bridge
- D = Drum Solo
- S = Solo
- E = Ending

I'm hoping that the next version of Jamstix adds some extra choices, such as a Silent section, Breakdown, and Refrain.  But those aren't critical, there are ways to emulate all of those concepts.  As it stands now, you can easily make anything work.  You might have to get a bit creative, ie. for a Verse/Refrain song, you might want to build it as Verse/Chorus.  That doesn't matter.  You can adjust the lengths of each part no matter what you call them.  As Shakespeare once said, "What's in a name?"

Next comes the Style.  It may say "8th Rock" as a default.  Go in and explore some of your own choices.  I have the full "Studio" version of Jamstix, so I have a lot of extra styls and drummers and expansion paks.  In total, I currently have 510 different styles in 28 different groups.  Some of the 28 groups include:  Afro-Cuban, blues, funk, breakbeat, electronic, gospel, drum & bass, metal, march, Motown, country, R&B, surf, and others.

Click on the little black triangle that appears to the left of some of the styles, and you will see a bunch of sub-categories.  For example, under "rock" I have eleven different sub-categories.  Under "country," I have eight.  Under "other world rhythms," I have Beguine, Bolero, Middle Eastern, and Tango.  And finally, under Jamstix 1 (the legacy styles) I have what looks like a couple hundred different styles.  After you choose a style, you can click on the default button to the right to set it as your default, if you want.  Once you've picked a style, don't forget to press "Load" to load the samples into the player.

Next, you can pick your drummer.  The default is probably "James Stix," the usual Jamstix default.  I have a couple dozen other drummers who, as I alluded to in the last video, have first names that match a lot of famous drummers.  I'm pretty sure that I know who over half of them are, and I'll put my list of guesses at the bottom of this blog post.  There's probably a full list online somewhere.

In addition to the named drummers, there are a couple of special presets.  For example, "Latino" specializes in Latin flavours.  "Machine" is used in electronic styles where a more "drum machine like" behavior is desired, by disabling the limb transition time logic and avoiding timing or power variations.  There's also  a "Silent" drummer who doesn't create or modify any notes (this is good when you're hand editing a part that's already laid down).  There's a player description on the right side of the drummer panel to give you some feedback about the style of each drummer.  Again, once you've picked your drummer, don't forget to click on the "Load" button.

The next item you can pick is the kit.  When I did the demo song for the previous video, I stuck with the default, the Standard Rock Kit.  However, since I have the Studio version of Jamstix 3, I actually have 146 different kits to pick from.  Again, there are broad categories on the left side, including kits to match a lot of the "Style" choices we've already covered.  But you don't have to match a kit to its style.  You could pair a New Orleans Jazz kit with a Drum and Bass style if you want.  And of course, many of the styles have a black triangle beside them which you can click to see a list of sub-styles.  If you're looking at using a kit style that has sub-styles, you must actually pick which sub-style you're going to use.  For example, you can't just pick "drum and bass" as a generic kit style, without deciding on which particular sub-style you'll use.

A couple of the kits are special.  You'll see kit categories for Additive Drums, BFD, and Toontrack (EZDrummer).  If you look at the kit contents on the right side of the window, you'll notice that these say "MIDI output only," whereas all the other kits listed info to show where the audio samples will come from, and perhaps some description of the piece of kit.  The reason these say "MIDI output only" is because they are default routings.  You don't get the sound of BFD, etc., unless you happen to own that particular third-party drum module software or sound bank.  However, they're good to have, because if you do own Addictive or BFD or EZDrummer, this is a perfect quick way to route the Jamstix MIDI out to your other drum module and take advantage of the high quality samples.

Once you've picked the kit you want to use, make sure you click on the "Load" button on the lower right, to load it into the player and return you to the Song Builder menu.

If you have a version of Jamstix that includes the Jamcussion expansion, you'll also need to pick a Style, Drummer, and Kit for your Jamcussion sounds.  Remember that Jamcussion, if you have it, is a hand percussion based rhythm section that can accompany your main kit, or even play alone without a kit.  Picking the Style, Drummer, and Kit of the Jamcussion section is done exactly the same way as picking the Style, Drummer, and Kit of the main drum kit, although of course this is hand percussion based, so all the styles and drummers and kits are different.  You may want to experiment a lot here to find a Jamcussion kit that sounds appropriate with the main kit you picked.  Or then again, you may not.

I know that I said earlier that it's easy to put together a song really quickly, but I just showed you a lot of complicated choices.  Don't worry, you'll quickly start getting used to the choices of Styles, Drummers, and Kits available, and it won't feel like you're dealing with much.  And worse case, if you're confused at the start, you can just ignore it all and use the defaults.

We're just about finished creating your first song.  You just need to pick how many bars you'll have in a standard verse in your song, and how many in a standard chorus.  After you do that, click on the "Create A Song" button, and look over at your Song Sheet editor window on the left.  Your song should now be all laid out for you.


Song Sheet

At this point, you might want to make some minor tweaks in your song.  Do you need to change the number of bars in any of your parts?  You can double-click on the part's name (or anywhere else on the line) and it comes up with a list of things you can edit.  You can rename the part, change the number of bars in the part, or change the number of repetitions.  You can also change the time signature if you enable this in Options, but remember that Jamstix still syncs to the tempo of your host.

There are a couple other columns on your song sheet that you can play with if you want.  The RF column stands for Repeating Fill.  If this is checked, Jamstix plays a fill whenever the part is repeated.  The TF is Transition Fill, and if checked, a fill gets played on the last bar of the part.  The TRG column deals with trigger keys for Live Loop mode.  I'll talk about that in one of the other videos, it isn't important for most users.


Drum Kit

Ok, so now that we've gone through the Song Sheet, let's take a closer look at the kit we've picked.  Click on the kit tab up to the right in the Main Menu area.  I already demonstrated in the last video that you can click on different parts of the kit to preview different drums.  Also, because most of them have multiple articulations (sounds), you can hear different sounds depending on exactly where on the graphic you clicked.  This is slightly tied to a way of letting you preview MIDI velocity variations.  I'm going to try to avoid getting deeply into MIDI here, but the short version, if you don't understand MIDI, is that as you have higher "velocities" for notes or hits, the audio volume will probably also increase, and the type of sound of the hit can also change.  For example, a low velocity hit on a ride cymbal might be fairly quiet and sound like a light pinging sound with reverb, whereas a heavy velocity will probably be louder and might sound more like a "clunk" when it hits.

Depending on your kit, you may see other things like jam blocks, shakers, eggs, cowbell, tambourine, chimes, etc., spread out on the visual display around your kit.  Try clicking on some of them to preview them (this only works if the song is playing in the host).

If your song is playing, parts of the kit will light up as they're hit.  Watching a performance from overhead as your song plays is a good education in itself.  If you want to single out a specific part of your kit to see its effect on the performance in progress, you have two useful options.  You can hold Ctrl and left-click on that piece and it will be solo'd, while the rest of the kit is muted.  If you do a Shift-click, the piece is muted while the rest is solo'd.  These key commands are presumably different in the Mac version.

If you turn off the lock button, you can move pieces of the kit around.  I mentioned this in the first video.  If you pull a piece of the kit away slightly, the drummer will be less inclined to use it.  Pull it too far out of his reach and he will stop using it completely.  Rearranging the layout of the kit can affect the drummer's performance.

The dice icon is also interesting.  Click on it and the main kit will be rearranged somewhat, both in terms of layout and exact drums present, depending on what's available.  Go ahead and try it.  It can't hurt.

Up to the top left of the graphic of the kit, you'll see a drop-down tab beside the kit name.  Check it out.  Here's where you can adjust output routings if your host allows it.  Many hosts allow for up to eight separate outputs, although right now, Pro Tools is limited to a single stereo master out.  Be aware, as the manual states, you might have to configure your host to support multiple audio outputs or else you'll only hear the sounds going to the first output.  This depends on which host you're using.  If this all sounds like Greek to you, don't worry – the default value is for it to just work without any adjustments.

There are also a number of options in this menu for sending audio or MIDI output.  Hopefully they're fairly self-explanatory.

The closed hi-hat variations menu lets you affect how much variety you'll get in the high hats, which can impact the realism of the performance.  Directly underneath that, you can turn position based dampening on or off.

Resetting the visual kit arrangement doesn't seem to affect a kit generated from the dice, but if you pulled an individual piece of the kit away manually, this returns everything to an optimal placement.

Finally, the Key Map options are related to MIDI, which a lot of people won't worry about.  I'll skip those for now, but if you're really experienced with MIDI, the Key Map is the assignment list as a tabbed text file.

Next, try to right-click on part of the kit.  Now you have the option to remove the piece you clicked on, change its sound, or add another piece to the kit.  Try playing with some changes to your kit.  There are tons of options.  Remove a piece, change a couple, and add something else.  You'll find that there are tons of choices and its fun and easy to make big changes.  If you like what you've created, there's a save button in the upper right.  If you don't like what you've created, click on the "Load" button (or double-click the kit name over to the left) to bring up a new kit on screen.

Open the kit list again by clicking Load.  You'll see a couple of options under the list of kit contents:

- Lock Outputs locks the current output assignments so they won't be changed if you load a new kit.

- Lock Mixer locks the mixer settings from being changed by a new kit.

- Keys Only will mean that Jamstix only loads key assignments and not sounds or mixer settings.  This is for advanced users.

Finally, there is a "Filter" box at the bottom of the window.  This box lets you control what gets loaded when you load a new kit.  This is handy for lots of creative kit composition.  Maybe you like most of your current kit except for the cymbals.  Click on "Cymbals Only" to load cymbals from another kit while leaving the rest untouched.


Editing The Kit

To edit part of your kit, click on one of the pieces.  That piece can be changed with the kit editor down below.  You can click on the name to load a different sound.  You can change the volume, pan, ambiance, dampening, or tuning of that piece of the kit.  You can change MIDI parameters, if you're comfortable with advanced MIDI use and routing. 

On the right side is a velocity scaling graph.  Again, this section is only going to be useful for advanced users.  If you're being fed external MIDI that's playing through your kit and it's all at lower velocities than you'd prefer, you can use this to raise velocity levels in a linear scale or some sort of compressed or expanded curve.  You can also scale velocities down this way.  There's a lot of flexibility to get your MIDI data in to a useful band/range.  The Min and Max buttons are similar here, you can set Min and Max levels and incoming data will scale in that range.


Mixer

Next, let's jump over to the Mixer tab of the Main Menu.  You'll see that it's an eight channel mixer.  If you change the number of outputs you're using, you'll have to totally shut down then re-load your host, since audio outputs are set during the opening of your host when VST plug-ins are loaded. Also, remember that in the current version with AAX compatibility, Pro Tools is limited to a single master out.

Let me cover the features of the mixer in point form:

- The drop-down tab at the upper left lets you load or save mixer settings.

- When you start out, the EQ button is depressed and you have low/mid/high EQ knobs beside each channel slider.

- Click on the Comp knob and the EQ knobs will get switched out for four knobs controlling compressor settings.  If you know how a compressor works, they'll make sense.  From top to bottom, they control your threshold, attack, release, and wet/dry mix.  The blue button turns the compressor on and off.

- Click on the Echo knob and your compressor controls will be replaced by delay controls.  Top to bottom, the three knobs control feedback, low pass filter, and wet/dry mix.  The delay is also synchronized to the host's tempo.  So the 8th means eight note delay.  Click on it to see a list of choices, down to 48th note.  The –C- below it means that the delay is centered, but it can be changed to a slow or fast pan if you want.

- The Flip Stereo toggle changes audio from drummer's to audience perspective.

- Downmix puts all outputs to channel 1.

- The AMB To Last toggle will direct all ambient effects to the highest output channel.

- If MIDI Only is enabled, audio samples are unloaded and MIDI just routes to the host or to a drum module.

- The AMB knob controls the overall ambiance level for the currently selected drum or Jamcussion kit.

- DMP controls the dampening of the room's simulated ambient sound.

- WID adjusts the stereo panning of the kit.  All the way left is mono, all the way right is full width stereo.


MIDI Remote Control

I've tried to avoid getting into MIDI in this video, to keep it simple for people who don't need to play with MIDI.  But some of you may know that separate from MIDI note data, you can use what's called a MIDI controller to adjust controls in your software more easily than doing everything with a mouse.

If you don't understand what a MIDI controller does, you should.  You don't need an indepth knowledge of MIDI to understand or use one!  First, remember that it's called a MIDI controller primarily because it's using MIDI in the background as a communications system to control stuff.  So it's less technical than you might have expected.  It did a comprehensive video about MIDI controllers not long ago.  I really recommend that you check it out to understand exactly what a MIDI controller is capable of.



Anyway, the point of this is that you can control all of the mixer controls simultaneously using a MIDI controller.  This is so much easier and more powerful than trying to use a mouse!  Of course, if you're comfortable with automation, you can also automate controls by drawing or recording envelopes.  So much power.  Strap yourself in and feel the G's.

A Gift for the World - Donate Spare Computer Time

As I write this, depending where you live in the world, today/tomorrow is a major holiday for people of certain religions. Of course, there are billions of people around the world who don't celebrate right now, but who celebrate other holidays at certain times of the year when gift-giving is a tradition.

No matter what holidays you celebrate, or when you happen to read this post, how would you like to give a gift to the rest of the world? And it doesn't really cost anything (except a bit of electricity consumption when your computer is turned on).

The gift is participation in a volunteer "grid computing" project. Wait! I know, your eyes started to glaze over when you saw "grid computing."  Please, bear with me for a second!

There are literally hundreds of millions of computers around the world.  Many of them are inexpensive laptops or tablets for personal use.  You might not think that your "old laptop" is very powerful, but the interesting thing is that it is probably only "in use" for about 2-5% of the time when it's turned on.  The rest of the time, it's sitting there waiting for something to do.  Even when it looks busy, because it's streaming music or uploading a YouTube video, the brain of the computer (the CPU) is idle most of the time.

So it's possible (and easy) to set up your computers so when they're turned on but not in use, they're helping solve scientific problems that could benefit millions of people.  For example, my laptop is currently running projects to help study proteins.  This research is useful in fighting diseases such as malaria, cancer, Alzheimer's, and HIV.  My laptop is also helping to catalog a high quality model of our near galaxy.  It's also searching for pulsar stars, and working on a few other projects.  And it's not costing me a penny, other than my electric bill.

  



Ok, at this point, if you don't want to try to help cure diseases like cancer, Alzheimer's, etc., then you can stop reading.  But if I've aroused your curiosity, let me describe in more detail how it works, and I'll explain some of the specific projects that I'm supporting.


The Software:


The project is called BOINC, which stands for Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing.  Berkeley of course refers to the University of California at Berkeley.  You don't have to be very tech-savvy to make it work on your computer.  The people at Berkley set up the software to try to make it as user-friendly as possible, and to run in the background so you never notice it.

BOINC is currently available for a number of platforms.  For Windows, your computer must be running XP (service pack 2) or a more recently operating system, which should cover 99.98% of all Windows machines still functioning.  For Mac's, you need OS X 10.4 or later.  There are also versions for Linux and for Android, although the Android software is currently not working properly since Lollipop was released.  That should be fixed shortly.

How It Works:


Basically, an institution that has a very large amount of data to process, but not enough computers to do it, can set up their project with BOINC.  People who decide to contribute computer time to a project will receive small chunks of data to process.  Your computer will spend a few hours or a few days processing this chunk of data, and then sends the results back to the project's institution.  The institution then sends you another chunk of data to work on.  This all happens in the background, so you don't have to spend any time answering or sending emails, etc.  And if you're worried about the internet usage, you can restrict the times that data is sent or received, and you can cap the bandwidth if you want.  But for most people, this won't be a big deal.  The bandwidth that most of these projects will send/receive in a day is probably less than you'd use watching a two-minute YouTube video.  If you're on Android on a phone, you can tell it to wait until you're at a free WiFi point to send/receive, so you don't use any of your mobile data.

The strength of the system is that the institution can be sending chunks of data out to dozens or even thousands of computers all around the world to simultaneously help work on analyzing data!  If you're curious about what happens to data that can't be processed, and whether or not it affects the project, there are safeguards.  For example, if you are processing info for a project and your laptop gets run over by a bus, there are deadlines built into each chunk of data.  So for this example, if the institution doesn't get results back from the data chunk that your computer is working on within say, 30 days, it sends the same chunk out to someone else's computer to analyze.


Slightly Technical Section:


You can ignore this short section if you want to avoid technical stuff!

If you want to really control the parameters for BOINC, you can customize a lot of stuff.  For example, I have mine set up so that after ten minutes of no activity on the computer, it starts to run.  I think this is fairly typical, although maybe the default is one hour.  But as soon as BOINC detects that you're using the computer (either through physical interaction such as a keypress, or high CPU usage such as watching a video) then it suspends operations until it knows that you're not using the laptop yourself.  This way, your laptop is never "slowed down" when you're using it.

For CPU usage, I have mine set so that BOINC doesn't run if my CPU is over 15%.  When it is running, I have it capped at a maximum of 95% of CPU.  For people with advanced graphics cards, which probably isn't a lot of people, you can allow BOINC to use the processing power of your card.  For example, I have a fairly nice nVidia GeForce 870M video card, so that's also helping to do calculations when BOINC is running.  BOINC supports quite a few nVidia and ATI/AMD cards.

From the BOINC Manager program, if you want to get really technical, go into View and switch to Advanced.  Then go into Tools and select Computing Preferences.  This is where you can play with your CPU and network and hard drive usage settings.  You can also determine whether or not it auto-loads when you boot your device, or whether it has to be turned on manually.  You can also temporarily do a suspension of processing with a single click in the Manager program.  For instance, I have mine set up to auto-boot and run most of the time, but just in case, I suspend it when my computer is rendering large video and audio files (although it shouldn't run then anyway because my CPU is too busy).

Although BOINC runs on all major platforms, not all individual projects using BOINC are able to run on all platforms.  For example, many projects can't take advantage of GPU processing, and some projects only run in Windows and Mac environments.


Cool Stuff:


BOINC on all my machines has a screensaver, which I've turned on.  I've matched the screensaver start time to my "start BOINC processing after 10 minutes of downtime" setting, so when BOINC starts, the screensaver comes on.  You don't have to run the screensaver.  However, for some of the projects, it's pretty cool, and it's a nice conversation piece if someone notices it and asks what your computer is doing.  You can tell them that you're saving the world.

To get to your screensaver settings in Windows, go to Control Panel then Display then Personalization.  I have mine set to never blank, run the generic BOINC portion for 1 minutes, then run project screensavers for 1 hour.  So it keeps switching back and forth between the generic one (1 minute long) and then an hour of various project screensavers.  Within the project screensavers, I have it set to switch every 2 minutes, so there's more variety.

Some of the screensavers keep spinning or displaying changing graphics of stuff being studied, so a single screenshot isn't very exciting.  But here are screenshots from two projects that my laptop is running, from the Rosetta and Einstein projects:




These screensavers have captured the attention of many people who have been by my house to visit.


Projects:


Here are some of the projects that I'm supporting.  I have them set to cycle automatically, so my laptop processes one for an hour, then moves on to the next, so they eventually all get an equal share of my computer's time.  In the preferences, you can allocate different percentages of your overall CPU to various projects, in case there are some projects that you want to support more than others.

Milky Way 
This project is creating a highly accurate three dimensional model of the Milky Way galaxy using data gathered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.  They have a facebook page and website and YouTube channel, like many of the other projects.

Rosetta
Determining three dimensional shapes of proteins in research that will hopefully lead to a cure of some major human diseases, including diseases such as HIV, malaria, cancer, Alzheimer's, etc.

SkyNet POGS
An astronomy project studying sixteen different properties of galaxies, and also helping to produce an atlas to help astronomers better understand the distant universe.

MalariaControl

Einstein
Searching for spinning neutron stars (pulsars) using data from the Arecibo observatory.  Volunteers helping with this project have already discovered several dozen pulsars over the past couple years!

SETI
This is the project that got BOINC started over a decade ago.  This project searches through data gathered by various observatories and looks for non-naturally occurring radio signals from outside our solar system, in other words, the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence.  So far, none have been found, but people continue to search.  You probably know this joke: "What's the biggest sign that extra-terrestrial intelligence actually exists?  That they haven't tried to contact us."

World Community Grid
This one, sponsored by IBM, is actually a group of non-profit projects on things like research into HIV/AIDS, cancer, tropical and neglected diseases, solar energy, clean water, and many more.  For instance, there is an Ebola research project available from this group.

Obviously, there are dozens of projects available to chose from.  You can contribute to just a single project, or you can contribute to a dozen or more.  Your choice.  You'll find that most of the projects specifically fall within research areas within the following fields, due to the data-crunching requirements of these areas of study:  astronomy, math, physics, quantum physics, biology & life sciences, and medicine.  Just remember that you have to install BOINC itself before you start participating in a project.


Getting Started:


After you install the BOINC software, you'll have to go to the "load project" section and pick a project that you want to support.  After that's set up, load another project if you want.  You'll probably be impatient at first to see it start working.  Give it time.  When you first install it, it needs some time to download data to process, to think about how to set things up, and so on.  Also, your stats screens and screen saver will display stats showing how many "work units" your system has completed.  Don't expect those to go up right away!  It may take hours or a day or two before your system finishes processing the first batch of data, then the data has to be sent back to the project sponsor and verified.  So it may look like you've processed 0 units of work for a few days, and then all of a sudden it'll jump up to hundreds or thousands of units processed.  Be patient.

You may wonder how many people are participating in these projects?  As of today, it appears that about 236,000 people from around the world are contributing computer time to various BOINC projects.  They are doing this on about 481,000 computers.  By the way, many users are running BOINC on several machines and tablets and phones simultaneously.  For instance, I have it running on three devices in my house.

I highly encourage you to contribute to this project.  Seriously, what do you have to lose?  Some people leave their computers running all night, doing nothing!  Think of how good you'll feel if you know that your computer isn't dormant, it's helping advance research in the cure of diseases that kill millions of people every year!

Also, the screensaver options are great.  They've really drawn attention to the project when people see them.  The whole concept is a great conversation starter.  Next time you have friends over to visit, wouldn't it be cool to say, "Hey, I just set my computer up to help study a potential cure for Ebola."

If you're worried about the electric bill, remember that it's not going to cost you anything unless you leave the laptop on longer than you normally would have.  And realistically, leaving a computer on overnight, year-round, to contribute to these projects is not much different than donating $20 once a year to a local charity.

Even if you only have a single computer running the BOINC software, and it's only running a few hours each day, you're still contributing to a great cause.  And what about your computer at work?  If you're not on a special networked computer, maybe that one can also be allowed to BOINC?  You better check your company's policies first, but some companies are fine with this.  After all, it's for a great cause.
