Las Vegas Mix from July 30th

I've got a mastered copy of the set that I played on July 30th, 2010, at the Defcon 18 Hackers' Convention.

A bit of background about the set:
- I was pretty reluctant to post this at first, because I didn't think it was that great. But after listening to it this week, I realized that it didn't turn out that badly.
- The first half hour has some rough mixes - the show was the first time that I had touched a pair of CD players in four months, so I felt a bit rusty. After realizing that I was a bit wobbly, I played extremely conservatively for the rest of the night, and just focused on making sure that the timing was good.
- I was playing on a mixer that I wasn't entirely familiar with, so there are no effects or filters in the set.
- Yeah, I screwed up a bit just before the 18:00 mark. I started to bring a track in, and faded it out quickly.
- The track of my own that I played during the set (Highway 22) was not mastered properly (I was working off a laptop and headphones all summer), so it sounded pretty lacklustre compared to the other tracks from Beatport and from other producers. I mixed out of it well before the end of the track for this reason. I won't apologize though, since my mastering of the full set this week masked some of that weakness.
- The end of the set was slightly distorted, I don't remember why I cranked the levels too high on that very last song. Not major, but noticeable to the trained ear.
- The mastering sort of tamed all the levels down for the version that you're downloading, but if you're a producer and looking at the audio file closely, you'll see where tProphet's announcements at the start were pretty peaked, so I ended up hard limiting them even after massive compression on the rest of the set.

The crowd was pretty much perfect for my first set in four months. About maybe 250-300 people by the time I finished playing, but it was more of a socializing crowd than a dancing crowd, since the event was a mixer party first and foremost. However, I was surprised to get quite a few people on the dance floor by the end of it.


  

I've played some of these tracks on my radio show in the past couple of weeks, and if you listen to both, you'll notice the ones on the show are different than the ones in this set. On the show, I don't edit any of the tracks, and leave all the breakdowns alone. For the live sets, I chop out almost all of the breakdowns and do a bit of other editing before I burn the tracks to CD, to keep the dance floor sweating. However, based on my positive experiences with making my radio show in Ableton lately, these could have be the very last two major live house/trance/techno shows that I ever perform using CD's. By the way, if you want to know which remixes I used as the basis for these edited tracks, you should be able to figure out most of it from the track listings of my Subterranean Homesick Grooves episodes from the past three weeks. If not, email me and I'll let you know which mixes I started with.

I played again the following night at the Ninja Party, off-strip. The Ninja set was amazing, in my own opinion, and one of the best shows that I've played. I'll be posting the mastered version of the Ninja Party set here in a few days. I have a radio show to make first though, for Friday night, and a show on Saturday night, so I probably won't have time to get the Ninja set online until Sunday. So think of this set as a warmup to the Ninja set.

I think my favorite three tracks from this mix are probably "To The Girls," "Seduction," and "Professional Widow." Alejandro Montero, a DJ and producer from Argentina who remixed "To The Girls," seems to be putting out a lot of work lately. Anyone who enjoys progressive house with a Latino twist should definitely check him out. The original of "Seduction" was released a couple years ago, but the track is probably new to some people. And "Professional Widow" is a really bouncy traditional house style track, as you'll hear.

Harper Havoc 2010 Set List

This is another top40/mainstream set, not house/trance/techno. It was a booking at one of the major residences at the University. Not a huge party, maybe 300-400 people, but a lot of fun.

I did not record this show. To be honest, I was scared to. I put out a call for requests before the party, and got a few pages worth - enough for about three nights of music. I tried to play at least one request from everyone, so it led to a very patchwork set for the first few hours. So for any of the professional DJ's looking at this who are thinking, "how can all that flow together?" ... well, it can't. But a busy dance floor works wonders when you're playing popular songs, even if you're switching up the genres frequently. I wanted to mix in some down-tempo, some classic rap, some contemporary hip hop, some rock, and some 128bpm dance tracks. Musical chaos. The last hour and a half felt like it flowed decently though.

This week's show marks a pair of milestones. First, I'm back in the studio after being on the road for four months. No more guest mixes for a while, while I catch up on a backlog of some great music that has been released over the last month or so. I'll still feature guests mixes occasionally throughout the year, but most of the time I'll be programming and mixing the shows myself.

Also, even more notable, this is the first episode of the show that I mixed using Ableton Live. Normally, I wouldn't want to consider using a sequencer when putting the shows together, because I like mixing the "old fashioned" way, on turntables or CD players. However, there's a big advantage in being able to use Ableton for some of the shows. It means that I'll still be able to put the shows together when I'm on the road, whether just on short trips while playing at shows, or for extended periods during the summer. Next summer, I won't have to rely heavily on the assistance of guest DJ's to keep the show going, and there shouldn't be any gaps in the publication schedule. Ableton is pretty powerful. This week's episode was just a quick experiment in using the software, to get my feet wet again, but I think I can put together some really strong sets for the show in the coming weeks.

Elliott Brood - Canadian Indie Folk/Rock

Today I've been helping set up the stage and lighting for a show featuring Elliott Brood and The Acorn. I thought I'd take a minute to write about Elliott Brood.

EB is a three-piece band composed of Casey Laforet, Stephen Pitkin, and Mark Sasso. They've been favorites on Canadian college radio for some time, and have toured internationally. They've done shows with bands such as Wilco, The Black Crows, Corb Lund, Blue Rodeo, and Broken Social Scene. Last year, they were one of the nominees for Canada's Polaris Prize.

Outputting or Importing MIDI from Groove Agent to a DAW

A lot of people have played with Steinberg's "Groove Agent" plug-in, and found it to be pretty handy for putting together a "quick and dirty" drum beat when producing tracks, whether they be classic rock, hip hop, pop, trance, or any of a couple dozen other genres. However, many people don't know how to do one of the basic tricks that makes this software especially useful.

Instead of playing Groove Agent as a stand-alone unit, and physically recording the output, or instead of using it as a VSTi plug-in within a host DAW such as Cubase, Sonar, Ableton, or a number of other audio editors, you can actually convert a "live" performance into a .MID file. This MIDI file can then be directly loaded into one of the tracks of your DAW. What's the advantage to this? Well, it obviously means that all of a sudden, you can more easily customize the "live" performance that you recorded on-the-fly by moving MIDI data around within the sequencer grid.

 

  

The problem is that it isn't extremely obvious about how to do this. Here's how:
- Load Groove Agent as either as stand-alone, or as a VSTi within your host.
- Go into the edit panel, and then into the setup panel.
- Switch MIDI output from "off" to "on."
- Switch from "live" to "file."
- Make sure your host (if VSTi) is at the proper master tempo.
- Choose your initial settings on Groove Agent.
- Hit "run," then play for a while. Hit stop when you're done.

Now, here's the catch: Where's the MIDI file? That's the problem. There is none! There is no "save to" location option. There is no file created.

Now, to solve this problem, turn the MIDI output switch to "off." When you do this, THEN the midi file is created. It automatically ends up on your desktop, as "Groove Agent Output.mid." You can then drag & drop this file back into your DAW for full-scale editing.

Remember to put it onto a track which triggers the Groove Agent if you want the same drumkit to sound. Of course, you can also load it onto a track and then load your own kit patch.

It's quite simple, once you know that you have to turn the MIDI output switch back off before the file is created.
