"When I Grow Old" - Indie Track with Mike Allison

Back in 2007, I wrote a song that I called, "When I Grow Old."  I was just digging through some old digital folders while updating my website, and I discovered several photos from that time.  So I decided to do a blog post here, based on things that I had written at the time, to save everything for posterity.  I'll cut & paste most of this, as it was written in the context of 2008 ...

Mike, tuning the bass

-----

People who visit my website because of my DJ’ing activities probably assume that I focus almost entirely on “dance music,” or progressive/tribal house EDM, for those who pay close attention to the particular genre that I specialize in. However, I have a fairly broad background in music (as my regular blog readers must realize).

Last year, I wrote a track which I thought was pretty catchy. I'd categorize it as "indie soft rock." I recorded a rough copy of the song one Saturday evening before work at the Pub, and sent the recording to Mike Allison to listen to. A day later, Mike emailed me back to say that he really liked the song, and had recorded a rough version himself. As soon as I heard it, I decided that I would try to release the song professionally.

What with all my other jobs and projects, it took a while for everything to come together, but over the next eight or ten months, I finally got the project moving forward quickly. We recorded the song partly in New Brunswick, in my own studio, and partly in Vancouver at Fadermaster Studios, with Shawn Cole as a recording and mastering engineer. Mike did the lead and backup vocals, and the acoustic guitar and bass. I played the drums, keyboards, electric guitar, and the shaker in our new version.

I also enlisted the assistance of Deanna Musgrave to help me put a video together. We did some filming last spring, and more filming this past fall. Deanna has a lot of practice at putting videos together, and has a really interesting abstract style for some of her work which contrasts with the usual style that I’ve used in the past to put a lot of videos together. Deanna put together the first version of the video for me, and then added some additional footage with the help of Julien Strasfield as a technical guru in Final Cut (since I’m used to Adobe Premium on a PC). Learning from Deanna was a really educational experience for me.

It’s interesting that this project has turned into a “Mount Allison University Community” project. Mike is an alumnus at MTA. Shawn used to be my roommate while we were at university, and he worked at the campus Pub with me as the Student Manager (his mom, Filis, still works at the university too). Deanna is an alumnus. Julien is still a student, although he graduates this year. Ian Allen, another employee at both the University and the campus Pub, did the graphic design work for the CD, and helped with marketing. When we needed extra actors for the video, we recruited Dinao (a friend of mine who worked with me as a bartender last year) to act as Mike's supposed girlfriend. For the older version of Mike & Dinao in the future, we were lucky to have the assistance of Robert Campbell (MTA’s President) and his wife Christl (a professor at MTA) as characters. In fact, the only two people involved in the entire project who are not members of the MTA university community are the two kids in the video – Evan (my nephew) and Mira (Evan’s friend).  I needed them to be in the "flashback" footage of Mike and Dinao when they were allegedly still young. Maybe someday one or both of them will decide that they want to come to Mount Allison.

Here’s the video, for those who want to watch it:

We also put together a full CD with this song as the first track on the CD, and I included eight of my favourite other Mike Allison tracks. Some of the other songs have been released on his various albums before, and some were not. The CD is called “Tilting At Windmills."

You may be curious about the name for the CD. “Tilting At Windmills” is a phrase from Don Quixote, by Miguel de Cervantes. Basically, "tilting" was another word for jousting (by knights) in Medieval times, and in the book, our hero thought that a windmill was actually a giant, and so he wanted to attack it by jousting. Essentially then, “tilting at windmills” has come to mean “fighting a futile fight” or “fighting against imaginary enemies,” or variations on the same theme. I suppose that you could infer that since this song (and CD) are being marketed purely through guerrilla or viral marketing approaches, rather than conventional musical channels, we are “fighting the musical establishment.” However, we’re just doing this for fun, so the “musical establishment” is not really an enemy. Don Quixote is the best-selling work of fiction of all time (for non-political, non-religious works), so hopefully some of that charm rubs off and makes the CD popular too.

If you want to download a copy of the song, feel free.  You should be able to download it from that SoundCloud link.

Here are the lyrics to the song, wr
itten by Jonathan Clark on February 22nd, 2007:

When I Grow Old

So this is goodbye. You knew that it was coming.
It's not like I'm running, without warning you at all.
I said months ago, it's time that I left here.
I got nothing left here, but the writing on the wall.
I've never been a loner, but I've always been restless.
You won't let me forget this, but I'm in no mood to fight.
Don't you be sad. I wanna see you smile.
I'll be gone in a while, but I'll be right here tonight.

When I grow old, will you still be here?
I'll show you that I do care, when I finally settle down.
I don't know why, you keep telling me it's not right.
I just want you to stay tonight, won't you please stay with me now?

Been here before, when we were both young kids.
When it didn't matter what we did, we were so much different then.
I can't pretend, that I can see the future.
But baby when we're older, we will be back here again.

When I grow old, will you still be here?
I'll show you I do care, when I finally settle down.
I don't know why, you keep telling me it's not right.
I just want you to stay tonight. Please stay with me now.

Berlin - Techno Track with free Ableton Project & Stems Pack downloads

Francis & I just finished up a new techno track recently, called Berlin.  We're offering free downloads of the track, and also of the Ableton project files and a Stems pack.

First, here are two versions of the track.  The structure of both is the same, although I prefer the instrumentation and mixing/mastering on the Self Isolation Remix:

Now if you're a producer/remixer and you're looking for access to the Ableton project or the Stems, we have them set up in Dropbox.  Go to my public account at djbolivia.ca/dropbox and then look in the "Bolivia's Remix Projects" folder.  There are four archives there for Berlin.  The two Ableton archives have the same contents (despite different archive sizes), but we wanted to make them available as both RAR and ZIP archives, because some people prefer one type over the other.  Same deal with the Stems, both archives have the same contents.  There's also a rich text file that gives a bit of basic info about the source files, ie. things like key, tempo, external effects and processing, etc.

If you make a remix, feel free to share it online, but please use the following for a filename format:  "Urban Francis & Bolivia - Berlin (Your Remix Name)"

Finally, here's a video:

STU Graffiti Party, 2012

I just played at the Holy Cross Graffiti Party at STU this past weekend in Fredericton. As always, the crowd was great and I had a lot of fun.

The set was done on CDJ players, not through Ableton. I didn't record it, but I did write down a set list below. It was a very mainstream/top40 sort of event, and I played requests for most of the night. I ended up playing about 17 or 18 requests, and unfortunately I had requests for four songs that I didn't have (well, one that was an inappropriate genre at the time, one track that I didn't have, and two tracks that I couldn't identify based on the possibly-inaccurate titles that I was given). I played some downtempo tracks (mostly classic hip hop) for the first hour, and the dance floor was pretty packed for the last two hours, when I played a lot of older top40 hits (these were mostly requests).

Here's the set list:

01. Digable Planets, "Rebirth Of Cool"

Bolivia: Live at the Pump NightClub, Saint John

This past Friday night, I played at the Pump nightclub in Saint John, New Brunswick. I took some video and recorded my set, which I'll be sharing later in this post.

To give you some background on the set, I told Fred Bissnette that I wanted to bring an Allen & Heath Xone 4D mixer and do an Ableton Live set using the mixer as an audio mixer, but also using the MIDI controls at the same time to control many of the effects/controls in Ableton.

I decided to play a set of classic house tracks. And I'm serious when I say that; I really dug up some older classics, a la Nexus6ix and Tommy Knuckles style (for those of you from Atlantic Canada). Many of the tracks were released between 1995 and 2003. I couldn't find electronic copies of a lot of them, so although a few were bought from Beatport, I actually got most of these by ripping digital copies from my own old vinyl records. Unfortunately, the quality isn't "wave" quality for all of the tracks in the set, but I think that just adds to the authenticity of the set.

As usual, I was running late and didn't have as much time as I would have liked to prep before the show. It was a two-hour drive to get to Saint John, but luckily one of my friends (Ian Allen) was driving, so I had that time in the car to prep for the set on my laptop. I warped the tracks and barely had time to set up some basic effects - enough to get me started. I expanded on the layout of the session once I got into the club and started playing.

Here's a quick two-minute video that roughly explains how things were organized once I first got set up. As mentioned in the video, I set things up to be a bit more complex as I was playing, and added some extra mapping and processing:

32. Max Linen, "The Soulshaker" (Original Mix).

I was going through the tracks a bit faster than I should have. I probably could have played the same music as a three hour set, instead of the slightly-under-two-hours that it was. To be honest, although rushing through the tracks led to a bit more variety and entertainment for the dance floor, I really think the set would have sounded better if I had mixed it over a longer period (less melodic overlaps and disharmonies in the key signatures). Also, the set is FAR more "busy" than I would play if I was playing progressive or tech-house, where I really aim for smooth mixes. The energy levels are high here, and there is a lot of chaos.

I'd like to thank Fred Bissnette (the resident DJ) for setting up this special event, Troy Morehouse (the owner at Pump), and the staff and other DJ's for making the night so fun.

Bolivia's "Atlantic Provinces" Mix Series

As I'm travelling across Canada, I'm trying to find time to catch up on a few more things on my website's "To Do" list, when I'm not actually behind the wheel. Here are archival links to three more of my older mixes from the end of 2006.

These mixes were an effort to use a bunch of old vinyl progressive house tracks that I had always liked, but had never managed to include in other regular mixes. The first one was used as an exclusive mix for a web collective (the now-defunct Lyrical Smelter) in Newfoundland who had asked me to put together a mix for their site, so I simply called it "Newfoundland." Since I wasn't feeling particularly creative, when I got to the next couple mixes, I just named them after other Atlantic Canadian provinces. But then I stopped before I got to the final mix (Prince Edward Island) of the planned four-mix series, so only three ever got completed. But at least I used up all of the vinyl tracks that I had set aside.

My older "Music To Code By" series had a lot of vocals in the tracks. These mixes had far fewer vocals. These are generally deeper and darker tracks than I had usually used in shows or studio mixes in the past.

Show: Irish Party at STU

I played another show at St. Thomas University tonight. To be honest, it was one of the toughest dance floors that I've had in the past dozen or more shows.

The format was a bit different than normal. I was asked to try to play a mix of "Irish Music and Pub Music" for the first hour or two, and then move into normal club dance music for the last couple hours. I played a dance set at the same school only three weeks ago, and it was one of the best events that I've played in ages. But tonight's show was harder.

For a DJ, trying to analyze the dance floor is the hardest part of the job. No matter how much music you know, you can't just play the music that you like personally, or else you're probably not going to make a lot of people happy. And what's tougher, the music that one person enjoys is quite often NOT the music that the next person enjoys. For a DJ, the best dance floor that you'll ever get is one where everyone likes the same kind of music, and it's also a genre that you like. But no matter how talented you are, if you have a "fragmented" dance floor, you're going to be banging your head against a wall. That's how I felt tonight.

Generally, around my corner of the world, there are three main genres of music for club-goers: classic rock, hip hop, and dance music. I'll ignore indie music, which is another important category, but not one that many "club" goers listen to. The indie-loving hipsters hang out in the cool bars (by the way, I occasionally work as a bartender in one of those sort of places, and I love it - you can find the "Ducky's" photo album on my facebook page). Anyway, usually, each person on the dance floor prefers one of those three genres, then tolerates or appreciates a second of the three, and prefers to avoid (or adamantly detests) the third.

So for tonight, since it was a couple days after St. Patrick's, I assumed that I'd be playing a combination of classic rock and "east coast" music and Irish or Celtic music. And I did. It actually went over much better than I had hoped (and I enjoy playing this sort of stuff). I prolonged moving into the dance music for a bit longer than expected. At this point, I was worried, because I had moved with some pretty up-tempo east coast music (Great Big Sea) right into dance tracks that actually had a slower tempo. So for the first ten minutes of dance music, it felt (to me) like the tempo was "dragging." Mental note for all DJ's out there: if you're in a situation like this, you're far better off just dropping to a track with a really slow tempo at first, to break up the energy expectation, and then start building slowly again. I knew this lesson; I just thought I could ignore it tonight. In retrospect, I'd do it differently. But other than that slight hiccup, once the "dance music" (top40) started, the energy of the dance floor really started to pick up.

Hip hop wasn't a problem tonight. I don't mind playing hip hop at all, in fact I enjoy it at times, but tonight wasn't the right setting. Luckily, I only had three requests for hip hop tracks. By the way, "Black And Yellow" was one of those requests as usual. When I started playing that back in September, I really liked the song but had no idea that it would peak six months later, instead of within the month. But I think I was able to steer two of the three requests to top40 tracks, so not a big deal.

The only real problem was that a lot of the people who really enjoyed the east coast music didn't seem to be completely into the dance music too. The dance floor was great for a few hours, but towards the end of the night it started to die down. I'm not used to that. I'm used to having the "peak" of the dance floor be at the end of my set (when I headline at clubs), then the lights get turned on and people go home wanting more. I suspect that since I was playing at a university, with a lot of students who are approaching finals in a few weeks, they were pretty worn out (especially after the real St. Patrick's parties on Thursday night). And to be honest, I also played two tracks tonight that are extremely popular in my own university town, but which didn't go over well at all tonight. Different universities, different mindset. Live and learn.

But anyway, although it was a pretty challenging night from my own point of view, every night can't be the best show of your career. There's no question that I'd still go back to play there again, and I still enjoyed most of the night. And learning new nuances about a dance floor is something that a DJ needs to be prepared for, even after years of experience. Also, the promoter/organizer was great.

Here are track listings from tonight's show. Remember that the first part was all supposed to be classic rock and east coast, and the rest could be loosely categorized as "top 40" and "club dance music." Also, more than a dozen of the dance tracks that I played in the second half of the set were requests - some of which really surprised me. Here we go:

STU Graffiti Party 2011

I played at the Graffiti party at St. Thomas University in Atlantic Canada several hours ago, and it was quite the event. I really wish that I had recorded the last couple hours of my set to post online. It really came together - some of the tightest two hours of DJ'ing that I've done in a while. Technically, almost flawless. I was pretty hyper while I was playing. In fact, I'm still bouncing around and probably won't get to sleep until lunch.

Here are track listings from the show, for those who are curious. As you can see, it was a mainstream/top40 party. I did half a dozen older hip hop tracks to get started, but moved into more upbeat tracks pretty quickly.

That last track was such a good track to end the night on. It's not an official release - just something that one of my good friends put together the other day. You can listen to it here:

Like I said, I wish that I had recorded the last two hours. However, I was planning to put out another top40 workout mix next week anyway, so I guess maybe I'll just do that sometime later this week. I can probably use a lot of songs that I played tonight on the next workout mix.

Yukon Blonde

Last night was about the first regular Saturday night that I remember in many years where I was in Sackville while there were students around but I did NOT have to work or have a show. I was a little apprehensive about the thought of actually relaxing and having fun on a Saturday night (not that work and playing gigs aren't fun), but the evening ended up being far more enjoyable than I expected, by the end of it.

I found out that there was a pair of bands playing in town, namely Greg MacPherson and Yukon Blonde. This had some interesting potential, since I had actually met Yukon Blonde in Vancouver a year ago when they were recording out at my good friend Shawn Cole's studio, Fadermaster. I think I ran into them at Mushroom too.

Anyway, Shawn recorded their self-titled full-length album that came out earlier this year. The album is great - it was nominated for this year's Polaris Prize, which is pretty prestigious as far as the Canadian music scene goes. Here's the video for "Wind Blows," the only song from the album that I could find with a real video:

Both groups put on an enjoyable performance. The show was at the Royal Canadian Legion. That was pretty cool too, since it was the first time I had ever been in there (despite the fact that one of my grandfathers served in the Canadian Navy). For those who didn't know, the Legion is one of Canada's largest community based service organizations, with nearly half a million members across Canada who contribute millions of dollars and volunteer hours for a huge variety of projects and causes.

Despite the time of year, Yukon Blonde (photo below) is NOT on their way to the Halifax Pop Explosion this coming week - their next shows are in New York. They've got quite a few shows lined up over the next month, so check them out if you can. Their MySpace profile has a list of upcoming shows:
