DJ Bolivia - Live in Tokyo at Velours

The other day, I was looking for a blog post from 2007, trying to find a copy of my live show at Velours (and the track listings).  I couldn't find a copy of the set on my SoundCloud page for some reason, nor did I have the full unbroken set in Dropbox.  I found a copy of the set that was cut in half, to accommodate fans who typically had to burn mixes to CD to listen in their car.  Oh what a long way we've come in just fifteen years!  We really don't appreciate how lucky we are these days when it comes to the power of computers and technology.  A lot of the "hi-res graphics" from the early days of my website are only 340 pixels square, if that.  And a lot of my photos were only 450 pixels wide.

Anyway, as I was digging around, I also noticed that I didn't have a track listing that made sense.  I had a track listing in my "Complete Track History" spreadsheet, but as soon as I started to look at it, I realized it wasn't correct (having been listening to the set).

I had to dig deep to find it, but eventually I succeeded!  But what a challenge.  I had to go back into old data files on the Wayback Machine.  But I'm fairly OCD, so it was worth the hunt.

Bolivia: Live at the Pump NightClub, Saint John

This past Friday night, I played at the Pump nightclub in Saint John, New Brunswick. I took some video and recorded my set, which I'll be sharing later in this post.

To give you some background on the set, I told Fred Bissnette that I wanted to bring an Allen & Heath Xone 4D mixer and do an Ableton Live set using the mixer as an audio mixer, but also using the MIDI controls at the same time to control many of the effects/controls in Ableton.

I decided to play a set of classic house tracks. And I'm serious when I say that; I really dug up some older classics, a la Nexus6ix and Tommy Knuckles style (for those of you from Atlantic Canada). Many of the tracks were released between 1995 and 2003. I couldn't find electronic copies of a lot of them, so although a few were bought from Beatport, I actually got most of these by ripping digital copies from my own old vinyl records. Unfortunately, the quality isn't "wave" quality for all of the tracks in the set, but I think that just adds to the authenticity of the set.

As usual, I was running late and didn't have as much time as I would have liked to prep before the show. It was a two-hour drive to get to Saint John, but luckily one of my friends (Ian Allen) was driving, so I had that time in the car to prep for the set on my laptop. I warped the tracks and barely had time to set up some basic effects - enough to get me started. I expanded on the layout of the session once I got into the club and started playing.

Here's a quick two-minute video that roughly explains how things were organized once I first got set up. As mentioned in the video, I set things up to be a bit more complex as I was playing, and added some extra mapping and processing:

I was going through the tracks a bit faster than I should have. I probably could have played the same music as a three hour set, instead of the slightly-under-two-hours that it was. To be honest, although rushing through the tracks led to a bit more variety and entertainment for the dance floor, I really think the set would have sounded better if I had mixed it over a longer period (less melodic overlaps and disharmonies in the key signatures). Also, the set is FAR more "busy" than I would play if I was playing progressive or tech-house, where I really aim for smooth mixes. The energy levels are high here, and there is a lot of chaos.

Christmas Night Party at Club 981

I played the annual Christmas night party at Club 981 in Neguac (near Miramichi) again the other night. What a party. I did this last year too. I would have expected that not a lot of people would come out to party on a Christmas night, but that was a mistaken assumption.

I've got a set list below, for anyone who was at the event and is trying to figure out some of the songs that I was playing. I assume that people would have known all the tracks from the last hour and a half, but maybe not some of the songs in the first half of the evening. I started out with a bit of rock & even a couple country songs, then moved into current pop music. However, when I started getting into dance music, everyone started requesting "classic" mainstream hits, so after the Lady Gaga track that I played, I gave up trying to play newer music and just went with songs that were a couple years old. As a DJ, it's good to play what the crowd wants to here.

 

For anyone in Halifax, I'll be playing a show with David Anthony on Thursday evening. This should be fun ... we used to DJ together pretty frequently about ten years ago, back in the days of vinyl, but we haven't played together in a decade. That show will not be mainstream/pop - look for a classic house set on Thursday evening.

Gabriel & Dresden

Yesterday was the birthday of one of my old roommates, and a former DJ at the club that I ran, so I ended up taking him out to a Gabriel & Dresden show in Las Vegas. It was at the Lavo club at the Palazzo. Nice place.




Gabriel & Dresden took a slight break from touring together in 2009/2010, but they've been pretty busy the last eight or ten months, with appearances in more than a dozen countries. I've seen six or seven of their shows in the past. I was even supposed to see them and do some filming at a show in New York that turned out to be their "last" show before their break, but I missed a flight connection by ten minutes due to snow in Canada, and lost that opportunity. That was one of my most disappointing moments in a long time.

Last night's show at Lavo was the best one that I've seen. They are definitely on their game these days. They've got a pretty versatile set-up - Josh works predominantly on Ableton Live (where he can create unique remixes on-the-fly), and Dave occasionally uses Ableton but is completely at home with CDJ's. The only thing that I thought was odd last night was that they shared the same pair of headphones. Dave usually had them on, but Josh occasionally borrowed them. I would think that they'd use a headphone splitter cord and each have a set of their own. Anyway, I saw the entire set (about three hours) and it was tight. I especially enjoyed the remix or layering of the Eleanor Rigby vocals in their set. The only regret about the show for me is that I didn't think to write down a set list, since I recognized just about every song they played.


G&D are so influential that two of their productions are in the top ten of the 2010 edition of the Trance Top 1000 tracks of all time ("As The Rush Comes" at position #3, and their remix of Above & Beyond's "No One On Earth"). They were also voted as America's best DJ's a couple of times. If you want to learn a bit more about the duo, check out this article on wikipedia, which also has a pretty impressive discography.

Felguk Video from Halifax

Felguk is the stage name of the Brazilian DJ's and music producer duo Felipe Lozinsky and Gustavo Rozenthal. Felguk were brought into the Paragon on March 5th, 2010, by a friend of mine, the late Galen MacDonald (GTM Group). Unfortunately, the footage that was taken that night was almost lost due to a major malfunction in the camera used. Galen and I talked about it last summer, when I was working out west and initially tried to start editing. He was disappointed that the footage had been lost and it wouldn't be possible to complete the video. However, I rediscovered the tapes again last week and by using some older cameras in the my studio, I eventually managed to recover a small amount which was used to put this video together. If you look closely at the final video, you can still see a few skips and artifacts that I regrettably had to include, since there was so little good footage that I could recover. However, I think that if Galen was still around, he'd be very happy to know that something came together eventually.

Show at Triangles in Moncton, February 11th

Tonight was a great night. Much better than I had expected. I got an ear infection on Wednesday and I was a little nervous that I wouldn't be able to hear very well for tonight's show, but it cleared up quickly with an overdose of antibiotics. Happy birthday to my friend Emily! And Nick, it was great to see you again.

 

The only real drawback of the night was that I intended to play a full set of tribal and progressive house, but because I was switching tracks too quickly, I was running out of music by the end of the night (I was the only DJ for the evening). It should not be possible to have thirty-seven progressive/house tracks take less than three hours, but I guess that I did edit everything earlier this afternoon and cut out all of the breakdowns, making all the tracks shorter. Anyway, I was getting a few requests for some top40 near the end of the night, so I actually decided to switch gears and move into top40 for the last twenty minutes, rather than playing some shitty progressive tracks that I had panned earlier in the evening. At this point, I was running out of music because I was switching between tracks a bit too fast, so I ended up digging into the mainstream crate. The dance floor loved it, but that wasn't my intention at the start of the night. Anyway, I'm not going to list those because there were only a few and I can't remember exactly what I played, maybe "Tetris" by Electrixx, "The Time/Dirty Bit" by BEP, "Dynamite" by Taio Cruz, "Raise Your Glass" by Pink, and "C'mon" by Tiesto/Diplo. First time I've ever played a Tiesto track in a live set, I think. I feel like there might have been one or two more tracks in there, but I can't remember.

I finished the night with "Sprawl 2 (Mountains Beyond Mountains)" by the Arcade Fire.

Sorry, but I didn't record this set. However, I do have a photo that Ian Allen (my sound tech and all-around support staff) took while I was DJ'ing. As usual, I'm screaming out the lyrics to a song, from the looks of things. Not that I usually play songs with a lot of lyrics, but when I do, I can usually count on coming home with no voice.

Voices Inside My Head

Lots of people are familiar with many of Sting's musical accomplishments, but not nearly as many are familiar with The Police. Sure, they had some major hits in the early to mid 1980's, like "Don't Stand So Close To Me" and "Roxanne" and "Message In A Bottle" (released in the late 1970's, but made popular again with the release of their greatest hits album), and all of their hits from the Synchronicity album. However, it is their earlier albums that I'm a big fan of. Incidentally, The Police were the top grossing musicians in the world in 2008, due to their reunion tour. Who would have thought it?

One of those early albums that I loved was Zenyatta Mondatta, even though I started listening to it almost a decade after it first came out. Oddly enough, this was the only one of their five albums that did NOT make Rolling Stone's list of the top 500 albums of all time (in November of 2003). It spawned hits such as "De Do Do Do," "Don't Stand So Close To Me," and "Canary In A Coal Mine." It also had "Shadows In The Rain," although most people are much more familiar with Sting's (admittedly much better) solo version from several years later (on Dream Of The Blue Turtles). Zenyatta Mondatta also had a lesser-known track called "Voices Inside My Head."


 

Voices has been remixed as a dance track quite frequently over the years. The version that I was always most familiar with was by KC Flight & Funky Junction, which I got on vinyl from Hooj Choons in 2001. Mind you, that version doesn't use Sting for the vocals, and it's more of a deeper, chuggy, progressive house track (especially the Fata Morgana remix).

There's a "new" version out right now by Santito. It was actually released a few months ago, but I've been listening to it a lot lately, and I think that it should do pretty well on the BPM & Billboard charts before too much longer. The club mix is a lot more mainstream than the KC Flight & Funky Junction track, so it's a lot more accessible to top40 clubbers. Also, it uses Sting's vocals, which is nice.

I'm Gonna Rock & Roll All Night

... although I don't have time to party every day.

Last night I played a rock set at my own bar. Obviously, I normally play house/dance/techno when I'm DJ'ing, so some people would assume that this was a bit of a departure. However, I tend to listen to more rock & indie music at home than dance music, and my DJ career actually started off with me playing rock sets at residence parties in university, before I even started playing dance music at the club in the mid-1990's.

 

I had a good crowd last night, which was mostly just sitting back enjoying the cheap draught, rather than getting up on the dance floor. I was able to be a bit more selective in my picks than I would have been if I'd had a crowded dance floor. That's good, because I can only play "Like A Prayer" or "Sweet Child Of Mine" or "Mr. Jones" so many times without it withering my soul.

Here's a set list, for anyone who is curious. I focused mostly on classic rock, and didn't actually fit in as much recent indie as I would have liked, but it was still a fun night.

New York City, Pacha, Shelter, Gabriel & Dresden, & more!

I just got back from a weekend in New York City. I went down to visit a friend of mine, Polly, who works in Research at Mount Sinai. I had been asking her questions a few weeks ago about a club called Pacha, and she suggested that I come down and see it myself. We figured that the 27th/28th would be the best weekend for me to visit, and ironically, it turned out that Gabriel & Dresden were playing at Pacha on Friday night. Small world.

I got to the airport on Friday afternoon, and since Polly was at work until 5pm, I just hung out in the airport for a few hours, listening to music and doing some work. That's when the next coincidence happened - I ran into Gabriel & Dresden at Laguardia. I talked to them for a few minutes, then headed downtown shortly afterwards.

I met up with Polly and the first thing we did was to get some alcohol for the weekend. After that, we ordered sushi for dinner, then went out to a pizza place to meet up with one of her friends. Later that evening, we eventually we made our way to Pacha. Pacha was a decent sized club - it had four levels, and I would say that it probably held about 800 people, as a guess. I'm not sure, but I think that the cover charge for regular guests off the street was $30. Drinks were $9 for bar shots like rum, and $7 for beer, so it was quite a bit more expensive than most Canadian bars, but not out of line for a big club like that. The lineup at the coat check was huge, which I laughed at because I didn't bring a coat. Of course, being a bar manager myself, I spent quite a bit of time looking at the logistics and operations of the club. I was pretty surprised to see that they had (I think) six bartenders working at each of the two main bars. My place would have two bartenders, or sometimes three, for the same volume of alcohol that was being served at each bar. But at least those bartenders looked a lot more relaxed that we are when we're serving.

Needless to say, the lighting systems were incredible, and the sound was decent throughout the entire club, not just on the dance floor. Gabriel & Dresden played from about midnight to 5am (I think the bars stop serving alcohol at 4am, but then they can start again at 8am). I was talking to Josh for a bit up in the DJ booth during his set, and they looked like they were really having fun playing that night. Their set was quite a bit different than when they had played in Boston - to me, both nights sounded great, but this set sounded more tailored to a dance club crowd, with more vocal tracks and mainstream tracks, whereas at Rise it had seemed more like a set for an afterhours club crowd (not surprisingly).

On Saturday afternoon, Polly took me for a partial tour, including Ground Zero, the ferry to Staten Island, Wall Street, and around other parts of Manhatten. Later in the evening, we went to a place called Crocodile NYC. This bar was insane. It had a crowd about the same size as my bar on a Saturday night (250 people), but it was less than a third the size. It was absolutely impossible to move around, or to get drinks quickly. To make things even more interesting, they gave out a free pizza with every beer, so for $20, we eventually got four large glasses of beer (two Stella & two Guiness, I think) plus three 12-inch cheese pizzas. It was a minor fight for me to finish the two beer and two pizzas, but I managed eventually, and was hungry for more. The bar was ridiculously warm, probably partly due to the crowds and partly due to the 700-degree pizza ovens in the back of the bar. Anyway, it was a pretty neat place, and obviously a lot of other people thought the same thing, considering the crowds.

  

After Crocodile, we went to a venue called Shelter, which was more of an after-hours type of club than Pacha had been, although they did serve alcohol. Cover was $25, bar shots were $8, and beer was $6. There were a whole bunch of good DJ's and producers performing that night, including D:Fuse, D-Formation (I used a couple of his tracks on my last mix), and Tone Depth (from Montreal). There was also another DJ who I had never heard of before, Chloe Harris. I was quite impressed by her set, so it was good to learn about her. The lighting system upstairs at Shelter was pretty impressive too. I wish that I'd been able to get some decent photos, but it wasn't possible with my camera.

On Sunday, we went for Chinese food in the afternoon, then did some more touring after dinner. We met a couple of my old friends from university in front of Virgin Records in Times Square, and we went up to the Marriot Marquis for drinks with them. After that, Polly took me to a fantastic Mexican restaurant for dinner. I've eaten Mexican food in a lot of places (including Mexico), but this was definitely some of the best that I've had. Of course, I can't remember the name of the restaurant, but I'm not going to forget the food.

The only sad part about the weekend was that there was so much more to see that I didn't have time for, so I'll have to go back as soon as I get a chance ...
