Christmas with the Halifax Classics, 2015

I just discovered the recording of Ian Allen and I playing at the Halifax Classics Christmas event a couple months ago.  I should have put this online immediately after the event, but I guess it slipped my mind, and now I'm having a hard time piecing together the track listings.  This event was all about the house music.

All of the tracks that we played at this show were ones that I edited beforehand, so a lot of them were mashups between two different tracks simultaneously, along with a number of other classic house samples thrown in.  We played this set on a pair of CDJ-2000's.

As I said, a number of these tracks were mashed up beforehand, so they may not quite be in perfect order, although I tried to piece together the correct order in which they appeared.  I didn't mention the dozen-odd extra tracks which I sampled or threw in over the top of the main programming.

Alex Augello - Disco Fruit (Original Mix)
Afrika Bambaataa - Funky Heroes (Original Orezero Remix)
Rafha Madrid - Crazy Desire (Original Mix)
Boris Dlugosch - Keep Pushin' (Purple Disco Maschine Vox Mix)
Jerome Robins, MC Flipside, & Crazibiza - Like That (Slideback Your House Edit)
Carol Jiani - Move Your Body (Original Mix)
Sebastian Roter - Work Me (Roter & Lewis Mix)
PME - It's Alright (Paperboy & Mike Even Club Mix)
Garret & Ojelay - Love You Better (Original Mix)
DJ Diogenes - Now (Original Mix)
Jason Rivas & Asely Frankin - Bambadam (JR & Funkenhooker Back From Ibiza)
      Crazibiza - Back2House (Original Mix)
Jay Frog & Dekoze - Uh Huh (Original Mix)
Mike Newman & The Viron - My Love (Original Mix)
Angelo Ferreri - Gimme Gimme (Original Mix)
Crazibiza - My Lips (Original Mix)
Slideback - Sick Of You (Original Mix)
Rick Marshall - Fever (Rich B Enriched Dub Mix)
Hoxton Whores & HXNT - Power (Original Mix)
DJ Hightech & Khalisa Adila - Fly (Original Mix)
Ivan Pica - Freak (eSquire Groove Mix)

I hope you enjoy it.  The mixing wasn't always the tightest, considering that it was on CD players instead of Ableton, but considering that we had some sound problems with one of the speakers and monitor, I'm pretty happy with the way this sounded.  This event is, without a doubt, my favorite event of the year ...

This Is Our Dream House, Volume 05

Here's a project that I started a few months ago, but only finally got time to finish up this week. It's another volume of my "This Is Our Dream House" series of deep house mixes.

For those of you who aren't normally into EDM (electronic dance music), you might be curious to know the differences between my regular style of progressive/tech-house and this deep house mix. Actually, there aren't always a lot of obvious differences, because I usually lean a bit more towards the techy side of deep house than the pure organic stuff. So at first, this might just sound a bit like my usual style, but slower. But that would be far from accurate - the deep house in this set can be identified by a few significant differences. First, on most of the tracks, the instrumentation is often jazzier, ie. there will be Rhodes or Wurli keyboards, more horns, brass, more clean guitar sounds, and more jazzy/bluesy vocals. Also, the tempo of this set is down around 120-121bpm, whereas my mainstream club sets and radio shows are usually around 126-130bpm.

Here are the track listings:

01. Nicole Graham, Harley & Muscle, "Just Breath" (Original Mix).

This Is Our Dream House, Volume 03

And here we go with another volume of the "This Is Our Dream House" series of deep house mixes.

This volumes includes the initial version of a track that I started to put together this past weekend, which I'm calling "Rumble Beach." It isn't entirely a deep house track, since it's fairly tech-house influenced, but it feels to me like it fits into this mix appropriately. At some point in the next couple of weeks, I'll put a post up on my blog and make it available to listeners as a SoundCloud download, and I'll probably also put the Ableton project files online, in case any of the producers out there want to download it and play with remixing it.

For those of you who aren't normally into EDM (electronic dance music), you might be curious to know the differences between my regular style of progressive/tech-house and this deep house mix. Actually, there aren't always a lot of obvious differences, because I lean a bit more towards the techy side of deep house than the pure organic stuff. This Is Our Dream House, Volume 2 (Deep House Mix)

Do you enjoy listening to deep house? Well, judging by the phenomenal positive response to my first "This Is Our Dream House" mix, there must be a lot of fans out there.

I started to put this mix together in November, but of course got distracted with some other projects over the holidays in Canada. I was going to add a deep house track that I've been working on with David Anthony, but I decided this morning that I should put that track on the next instalment of this series instead, so I could publish this mix today. There's no point including the track that Davy and I are working on unless the video for the track is also ready.

For those of you who aren't normally into EDM (electronic dance music), you might be curious to know the differences between my regular style of progressive/tech-house and this deep house mix. This Is Our Dream House, Volume 01

A few months ago I was asked to play a deep house set in Las Vegas. I enjoy deep house, but I rarely play live sets in that style as a DJ. However, that show went well, and I got a phenomenal amount of positive feedback about the set after I posted it online. Especially important was the fact that Marc Carnes, a former room-mate of mine (and the foremost deep house expert that I'm close friends with) gave it his stamp of approval.

I was talking to him afterwards about the set, and I decided that I'd like to share more of this kind of music with my DJ fans. So I've decided to start creating a deep house mix series. It's going to be an ambitious project. I'm probably only going to release a new mix about once every two months, but each mix is going to be four hours long, suitable for an evening of relaxing and enjoying the music properly.

I've decided to call this mix, "This Is Our Dream House." That's partly because the mix is a variety of house music, partly because deep house is often dreamy, and partly because I found a really cool graphic with that exact title to use for the cover, courtesy of Sam Brown at the Exploding Dog website. As my regular fans know, I'm a long-time fan of his art.

So at first, this might just sound a bit like my usual style, but slower. But that would be far from accurate - the deep house in this set can be identified by a few significant differences. First, the instrumentation is often jazzier, ie. there will be Rhodes or Wurli keyboards, more horns, brass, more clean guitar sounds, and more jazzy/bluesy vocals. Also, the tempo of this set is down around 118-120bpm, whereas my mainstream club sets are usually around 128bpm and my radio shows are usually 131-134bpm.

When I played in Las Vegas, my set was a bit disjointed, because it was a fairly last-minute booking and I didn't have time to get to know the music well. Programming is the most important thing when it comes to DJ'ing. Sure, mixing tracks properly makes a DJ sound better, but programming involves picking out good music to start with, and then coming up with a suitable flow. For the Vegas set at the Castles, I had good music, but my flow was fairly random. At least with this mix, I was able to think carefully about the order of the tracks that I used. Equally important, while I cut out a lot of the quiet sections and added extra drums for the Castles set (which seemed more appropriate for a live room), with this mix I'm leaving the tracks almost entirely unchanged except for a few select edits. You'll hear quieter passages in this mix too, not just the steady beats. But a side note for the audio engineers out there: I did compress the mix in Cubase at a pretty high ratio of 3.0, with makeup gain to bring it to -2 dB final, to give a more consistent volume for listeners in cars and other distracting environments.

Mix: Bolivia, "Live at the Las Vegas Castles, 2011-08-06"

This past weekend I was in Las Vegas for the annual DefCon computer hacker convention. I've got a lot of friends who go to the convention regularly, and a lot of the people that I travelled to Antarctica with are at the convention every year too, so I ran into dozens of people that I knew. And there are a lot of parties there, so it's easy to find places to play (although I regrettably had to decline playing at the big Sunday night pool party at the Rumor).

I recorded my sets from Friday and Saturday night. I'll post a link to the Friday night set shortly, but right now, I've got the Saturday night set online.

For Saturday night, the regular Ninja Party didn't happen because the main organizer, Barkode, has been pretty sick. That was an immense party last year, and my set is online here if anyone wants to learn a bit more. But because of the situation with Barkode, the Ninjas opted for a more subdued (but still very classy) event at the Las Vegas Mini-Castles. And because of the nature of the event, rather than playing my usual style, I did a four-hour set of deep house.

Osaka, Japan - DJ'ing at Oasis Lounge

I flew to Osaka (Japan) this past weekend for a show. Although I’ve travelled pretty extensively before, this is my first time in Asia, so it’s been a great adventure so far.

I started by trying to fly to San Francisco for a visit on Wednesday night. Unfortunately, I flew through Montreal and then Chicago. I got to Chicago with no problems, but when I arrived there, I found out that there had been a huge snowstorm there the previous day, which had cancelled over a thousand flights. It was really nice outside at the time, with very little snow on the ground, so I didn’t really think that there were going to be any problems. However, when I got onto the plane, the airline eventually said that they couldn’t fly us to San Francisco because there were no pilots left in the airport – the pilots for our flight had been diverted to fly another plane earlier, to help catch up on the backlog of stranded passengers.

This didn’t seem like it would be a problem – they said that they were going to fly in a different crew from New York to take our plane to San Francisco, so the delay would only be a few hours. However, by this time, the storm had moved so it was over New York, which meant that it took a couple hours longer than expected for that crew to get out of LaGuardia. By the time they arrived in Chicago, the airline decided that those pilots couldn’t take our plane to San Francisco, because it would put them over their daily flight time limit. Our entire flight ended up getting cancelled, which was a disaster because that put all of us into the huge pool of people waiting to fly stand-by. I then ended up getting bumped off or passed over for the next four flights to San Francisco, as the airline tried to slowly catch up on the backlog.

In the end, I did get to San Francisco, but not until after midnight (about twelve hours later than expected). I was a little disappointed by that, because that was the stop on the trip that I was looking forward to the most. However, on a positive note, it was the one night on the trip where I could mostly easily deal with not showing up. Hopefully I’ll be able to reschedule for a visit later this spring, or maybe right after the summer ends.

The rest of the trip went smoothly, and the flights to Vancouver and then Japan were uneventful. We crossed the International Date Line, so it suddenly became Friday afternoon instead of Thursday afternoon. I was a bit nervous getting into the airport because my passport was only valid for two more months and Japan requires a foreigner’s passport to be valid for six months from the time of arrival. However, I had the itinerary to prove that I had a flight already booked to leave the country a week later, so that didn’t turn out to be a problem. Dan Elliot from the Oasis Lounge picked me up at the airport, and took me directly to his club, where I started to orient myself to the Japanese culture. A few hours later, a friend of mine (Ian Warney) showed up. Ian is a DJ and is living in Osaka teaching English. We went out for a night on the town, and I met a bunch of people that evening.

On Saturday, I spent the day touring around Osaka, and taking photos. That evening, I played at Oasis, which turned out to be a very fun night. Ian found me again on Sunday night and we went out for more sightseeing, and then we ate at a nice restaurant in a skyscraper overlooking Osaka.

So far, Japan has been great. There are far fewer foreigners here than I had imagined, but that’s about the only real surprise. The only big challenge so far has been trying to figure out the subway system. I’ve been on subways all around the world (London, New York, Paris, Moscow, and a ton of other smaller cities) but the Osaka subway has been the most confusing that I’ve seen, by far. The fare varies depending on how far you are going, and you have to buy a ticket getting on, then electronic gates scan it as you leave your destination station and don’t let you out if you didn’t pay the right fare. If you didn’t pay enough, you have to go back to another machine and do a “fare adjust” on the ticket. The Osaka (and Toyko) subway systems are not one large system, but instead are a whole bunch of separate lines run by different companies, so transfers can get complicated with ticket changes. Finally, there are very few signs in English, to make things even more confusing. However, after a few days, it was starting to make sense to me. Some of the stations are incredibly busy though – there is one station which has an average of three MILLION people per day passing through it. That’s pretty impressive, considering that the subways shut down at 12:30am and don’t start again until 5:30am.

A few other interesting notes so far:
- The cities are very clean compared to North American cities.
- There is apparently very, very little crime in Japan, and people feel completely safe and comfortable walking around anywhere in the cities.
- I have only seen a few children in the entire time I’ve been here – the Japanese must hide them away somewhere.
- I thought that I might get away with not running into anyone I knew during my visit, but on Sunday night a friend who had gone to university (Kyohei) saw me downtown and luckily had the time to spend an hour or so touring with us. That was an interesting coincidence, considering that Osaka is pretty big (nine million people, I think).
- There are far fewer Western chains than I had expected (lots of Starbucks & MacDonald’s and KFC, but that’s about it).
- A small but noticeable percentage of the population wear face masks in public and while working, either to limit the spread of diseases, or to protect them from smog & allergies.
- The amount of seafood is astounding – it is available everywhere, even as snack food in convenience stores.

Needless to say, I’ve been able to take a ton of interesting photos so far. I’ve got two photo pages up on my website now from the Osaka portion of my trip, and I’ve tried to add many more observations about Japan in the captions to the photos. Here is a link to the Osaka photo pages:

After I left Osaka on Monday morning, I had three days scheduled in Tokyo, so I’ll write more about that part of the trip in a few days.
