Christmas with the Halifax Classics, 2015

I just discovered the recording of Ian Allen and I playing at the Halifax Classics Christmas event a couple months ago.  I should have put this online immediately after the event, but I guess it slipped my mind, and now I'm having a hard time piecing together the track listings.  This event was all about the house music.

All of the tracks that we played at this show were ones that I edited beforehand, so a lot of them were mashups between two different tracks simultaneously, along with a number of other classic house samples thrown in.  We played this set on a pair of CDJ-2000's.

Live in Los Angeles, 2014-11-07 - with DJ Bolivia

I played at a club in Los Angeles this past Friday night, a place called The Other Door in North Hollywood. The event was the launch party for an app called Cuddli, which some of my friends have created. I'll post more details here about Cuddli once it's out of beta testing. Anyway, the weather was warm, the show was fun, and I recorded it, so you can check it out.






This particular mix features two different styles of music. The first hour is mostly tech-house, which I usually play. However, I experimented with electro for the second half of the set, which is something that I don't typically play. Electro is a good match for the local music scene there. I was running through a Yamaha traditional sound console for a mixer, and it was located underneath the counter of the booth, so it was a pretty unconventional set-up. Due to the layout, I only had easy access to the bass and mid EQ knobs, and there were no effects available on board, so you won't hear a lot of creative effects in this mix. But the recording is clean and sounds good, which is what matters. We had a slight technical difficulty with recording the first minute of my set, but I fixed that with some DAW magic. The sound guy at the club, Scott Fuchs, was very competent and great to work with.

Another really cool thing about this show is that one of my friends from California (Carl Schwenk) was the opening DJ. He and I talked about DJ'ing a year ago, and he sent me a message a few months later that he was learning to DJ, but I hadn't realized how seriously he was taking it. I guess that some of the videos on my YouTube page helped inspire him and get him started. Anyway, he played well, and did a great job. It was great to see him, and I hope I get a chance to hear him again.

This Is Our Dream House, Volume 6 - deep house mix

I have a new deep house mix for fans, which you can download from this page. It's another volume of my "This Is Our Dream House" series of deep house mixes.






For those of you who aren't normally into EDM (electronic dance music), you might be curious to know the differences between my regular style of progressive/tech-house and this deep house mix. Actually, there aren't always a lot of obvious differences, because I usually lean a bit more towards the techy side of deep house than the pure organic stuff. So at first, this might just sound a bit like my usual style, but slower. But that would be far from accurate - the deep house in this set can be identified by a few significant differences. First, on most of the tracks, the instrumentation is often jazzier, ie. there will be Rhodes or Wurli keyboards, more horns, brass, more clean guitar sounds, and more jazzy/bluesy vocals. Also, the tempo of this set is down around 120-121bpm, whereas my mainstream club sets and radio shows are usually around 126-130bpm.

DJ Bolivia - Live at Club Maasai (Arusha), 2013-11-30

This is the last (and my favorite) of three shows that I recorded while I was travelling in Africa last month. This was recorded during a set at a club called "Club Maasai" in Arusha, Tanzania.




Maasai was a fun club. Good prices, lots of room to dance, and a friendly crowd. Their local resident DJ, Mathew Miller, was also very helpful. Also, a shout out to Laila Raza for helping arrange the show for me. Thanks, Laila!!

Although this set was at a club, and it seemed to be be a slightly more mainstream venue than Treehouse, I played a set that was a mix of house, tech-house, and techno, but definitely on the harder side. The tempo was a bit slow, at 126bpm throughout. The set, which was about an hour and a half long, was recorded on a Zoom H1 portable audio recorder, on a line coming out of the mixer, so the EQ'ing was captured.

DJ Bolivia - Live at Treehouse (Nairobi), 2013-11-17

This is the second of three shows that I recorded while I was travelling in Africa last month. This was recorded during a set at a club called "Treehouse" in Nairobi.

Treehouse was a great club. Very music friendly to all styles of music, not just underground/EDM. They also do live shows of bands and solo artists occasionally. They also had good prices on drinks. It's definitely worth checking out if you ever visit Nairobi.

This set, being played at a club, had more house influences than my set from Giraffe Manor. You'll find that this set (an hour long) was mostly house and tech-house tracks. Although I was playing at a fairly slow tempo, down around 125/126bpm, quite a few of these tracks had "busy" rhythm sections, so it sounds more energetic than you'd expect from music at that tempo.

DJ Bolivia - Live at Giraffe Manor (Nairobi), 2013-11-24

I just got back from a month in Africa. I played three separate shows there. Two of them were public shows at clubs in Nairobi (Kenya) and Arusha (Tanzania), and the third was a private event at a place called Giraffe Manor in Nairobi. This is the set from Giraffe Manor.




Giraffe Manor was really pretty awesome. I spent a bit of my time in Africa with a group of friends on what was called the Junglist Tour. This particular group of friends is pretty awesome. Most of them are ninja hackers & IT people, so they have associations with pretty much every company and thing that is internet. Anyway, Giraffe Manor is a pretty high-class lodge in Nairobi, and the group spent ten grand to rent it for the night.

The other couple of sets that I played in Africa were more house-oriented EDM. However, because of the dynamic of the crowd at Giraffe Manor, and their receptiveness to music with more of a deep tech emphasis, I tried to make this set less house-oriented than the other sets. So this set is basically all tech-house or techno, at 125 bpm (slower than I usually play). Well, I guess there are maybe a few house influenced tracks near the end. Also, since the sound equipment at the venue was limited, I did my mixing within Ableton rather than on a professional DJ mixer. The advantage is an especially clean recording, but the disadvantage is that there aren't any fancy EQ'ing and effects, and the mixing is pretty smooth and conservative.

Using Ableton Live to create Studio DJ Mixes

I recently put together three YouTube videos to teach people the basics of using Ableton Live software for DJ'ing. There are two separate approaches to DJ'ing with Ableton. Some people are interested in using it for live performance. Others are interested in using it to put together podcasts or radio shows.

The three videos that I have online right now are related to the second approach, putting together podcasts or radio shows. If you're interested in using Ableton for live performance, I'll have a few more videos coming in another month or so, although this first set of three videos for creating mixes will still be useful.

When the "live performance" videos are available, there will be three separate videos to teach you the overall process:
- Warping your tracks, to prepare for a live show (similar to the existing warping video)
- Using Ableton as a live DJ (mixers, controllers, sound card interfaces, dj booth hookup, performance)
- Actually doing a live performance

For the current approach, making a DJ mix, we have three videos online now:
- Warping your tracks
- Putting together your DJ Mix
- Mastering and marketing your mix


Warping Your Tracks in Ableton:

This video teaches you the basics of using Ableton, ie. how the software is laid out, and how to prep for a mix by importing and "warping" your tracks. Warping a track properly and accurately can usually be done in about a minute, once you know how, but you MUST warp your tracks before you play, if you expect to be able to beat-mix. If you're planning a "radio-style" mix format, ie. just fading in and out of songs without worrying about beat-mixing, then warping isn't critical.






Putting Together Your DJ Mix:

This video explains the process of bringing each individual track into the "arrangement view" and then using cross-fades on volume and other effects parameters, through the use of drawn automation, to make a great-sounding continuous DJ Mix.





Mastering & Marketing Your DJ Mix:

Once you have a mix exported from Ableton, you're not quite done. You want your final mix to sound as good as possible for listeners. This video teaches you how to do simple edits like removing leading and trailing silence from your mix file, adjusting the overall volumes through amplification or normalizing, the basics of compression, various encoding options, and more. At the end of the video, there is a short discussion about marketing your mix, such as choosing distribution methods, adding graphics files and "ID3" tag data.





I have a second series of videos that complement this series, and which focus on actual live performances using Ableton, ie. in front of a crowd. Those videos also talk about related aspects of being a performance DJ, including the use of external sound cards, MIDI controllers, and integrating your set with a DJ mixer, as well as tips that might help when you're playing in front of a crowd. Anne Savage & Max Graham: "House, Drum, & Bass"

I posted a link to this mix a while ago, but had to take it down eventually when I switched ISP's and wasn't able to store quite as many mixes on my server. But I was tidying up some music drives this afternoon and found this mix again, so I just uploaded it to MixRiot and I thought I'd reincarnate this blog posting. It's probably my favorite DJ mix of the past decade, so it seems fitting to post it on a New Year's Eve.

I talked to Max Graham about this mix a while ago, and he said that he and Anne made it as a promo mix, back in the Atomic Nightclub (Ottawa) days. Therefore, I'm guessing that they made it between 1996 and 1998, not too long before I started listening to it. All it was called was "House, Drum & Bass," and that's exactly what type of music it was.

As I said, this mix is one of my favorite mixes of all time. It had a huge influence on me as a DJ, even though I technically started DJ'ing about twelve or thirteen years before it was made. At the time I first heard it, I was DJ'ing at the university bar occasionally, playing mainstream dance tracks (think of the Much Dance series), but this mix helped broaden my appreciation of different electronica genres.  

  

Although Max Graham lived in England and Spain and the US while growing up, he ended up in Ottawa as a mainstream DJ in one club, and then after switching focus, he worked with some partners to open his own club (Atomic) in around 1996. His history as a DJ and producer is quite interesting. I had to buy some of his early productions such as Airtight, Shoreline, and Falling Together a couple times, because I essentially wore out the vinyl on my original copies. His sound was usually a trancy sort of progressive house, and was a big influence on my DJ'ing around 2000-2004 (as you can tell when looking at track listings of a lot of my early demos). I guess a lot of people know him because of his remix of "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" (below), which was very well done, although I prefer his trancier style.

Anne Savage is a DJ from the UK who established herself solidly with a number of heavy hitters in the early 1990's, playing regular residencies with people like Sasha, Laurent Garnier, and Tony De Vit. She's been involved with Ministry of Sound Radio, BBC1, and MTV Europe, and she's played cities and festivals all over the world. Her discography lists some of her work, either alone or in collaborations, although unlike Max, she focuses more on DJ'ing than on production work. She usually plays a pretty hard house style.
