This week I have one of the episodes that I've been eagerly awaiting all spring. Episode 017 features a guest mix by a DJ/producer from Halifax, Nova Scotia. If you've been a follower of my main website for the past several years, you definitely know his music. His name is synonymous with progressive house music in Atlantic Canada, and in my opinion, he's one of Canada's most consistent and knowledgeable DJ's. By now, you've probably already guessed that this week's guest mix is an hour of music by none other than Sean Keating. enjoy!

First, let me apologize that I've gone a couple weeks without releasing a new episode. I'm currently working in Western Canada in a forestry camp, and we've had problems with our satellite internet connection. I think that I have those problems resolved, and we should have a fairly regular weekly release schedule for the rest of the summer.

Episode 016 features a guest mix by a DJ/producer from Fredericton, New Brunswick. Ian Shonaman has been a friend of mine for many years now, and he's got a tasty deep and heavy progressive house/techno mix for you this week. Ian has been DJ'ing on and off for 10+ years with a focus on progressive house and tech oriented tracks. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Ian has been a part of the small but ever-evolving Saint John and Fredericton scene from it's initial stages. Musically, Ian has one foot firmly planted in progressive house and the other sampling all surrounding genres. He has found the best sounds coming from recent tracks from producers like Gui Borratto, Guy Gerber, Koen Grovenfeld, Pig & Dan, and Pezzner. Thanks for tuning in, and enjoy this week's episode!

This week's episode marks a change in pace for the show. We had to skip an episode last week because I moved out of my house and studio, and I've moved into a temporary studio for the next year or so until I get the new full-time professional studio built. In addition, because I'm on a work contract on the west coast of Canada from now until the end of July, I've got a group of fifteen DJ's lined up to do guest mixes for the SHG radio show over the next three months. I've managed to schedule guest mixes from many of the best DJ's in Atlantic Canada (when it comes to progressive house/trance), so I'm pretty sure that listeners will enjoy the variety over the next few months. At the end of July, I'll be playing in Las Vegas again for DefCon 18, and then heading straight back to Atlantic Canada to start work on the new studio, and to start production work on a number of audio and video projects that I have lined up.

In the meantime, to start off the Summer 2010 guest mix series, episode 015 features Kevin Theriault from Nova Scotia, with a mix of predominantly trance and progressive house. Thanks for tuning in, and enjoy this week's episode!

I recorded this week's show on Thursday night and should have posted it yesterday, but I got distracted and forgot to. I'm in the middle of moving out of my old house and studio space into a new one (in the same town), so I've been pretty busy for the past couple days working on carpentry and other projects to get the studio ready for the move. This is still only into a temporary space while I build a full-scale studio starting this fall, but the temporary space will let me continue my Berklee Music studies, A/V production projects, and SHG Radio Show in the interim.

Getting back to this week's show ...

I've been waiting anxiously for several months for Dave Dresden & Mikael Johnston to finally release their version of "Keep Faith" to the public, since I first got a copy in December. Quite a few mixes were just released this week as an exclusive on Beatport, so you can judge for yourself which mix you enjoy the most. I chose Morgan Page's version for this show. Other than this particular track, I went with an almost entirely non-vocal theme to the show.

This week's show features a special guest DJ. For any listeners who have visited my main website frequently over the past couple of years, the name Jay Vasseur will come as no surprise. A seasoned veteran of Canada's east coast music scene, Jay has spent most of his entire life manipulating sound in one way or another. With almost ten years of experience both behind the decks and in producing his own tracks, Jay Vasseur has the ability to combine all genres of music into a unique style of his own with blends that are smooth, seamless and always captivating.

Jay specializes in house music, but you can expect to hear anything in a typical set, ranging from deep to chicago to progressive to electro to tech house or all of it mixed together. If it is worth hearing, you will hear it done right.

I'm Gonna Rock & Roll All Night

... although I don't have time to party every day.

Last night I played a rock set at my own bar. Obviously, I normally play house/dance/techno when I'm DJ'ing, so some people would assume that this was a bit of a departure. However, I tend to listen to more rock & indie music at home than dance music, and my DJ career actually started off with me playing rock sets at residence parties in university, before I even started playing dance music at the club in the mid-1990's.

 

I had a good crowd last night, which was mostly just sitting back enjoying the cheap draught, rather than getting up on the dance floor. I was able to be a bit more selective in my picks than I would have been if I'd had a crowded dance floor. That's good, because I can only play "Like A Prayer" or "Sweet Child Of Mine" or "Mr. Jones" so many times without it withering my soul.

Here's a set list, for anyone who is curious. I focused mostly on classic rock, and didn't actually fit in as much recent indie as I would have liked, but it was still a fun night.

Here are a few notes about some of this week's tracks:

Metric (Canada) - Toronto is thoroughly represented in the opening track this week. Metric, a Canadian indie-rock band, has also been based outside of Canada at times (New York, London), but we're proud to call them our own. Emily Haines, the singer & keyboardist, also does a lot of work with another great Toronto-based indie group, Broken Social Scene. And then to top it off, this remix is by another pair of producers from Toronto, ALP & JFK, who form MSTRKRFT. As far as Canadian music goes, all of the groups above are very well known. Incidentally, for anyone who is in Halifax tonight, JFK of MSTRKRFT is playing at the Palace.

Max Graham (Canada) - Not many people remember Max from his time with a residency at Atomic in Ottawa, but Max and Atomic had a huge influence on Canada's underground scene, and Max because unofficially known as Canada ambassador for progressive house. Of course, he was propelled into mainstream awareness a few years ago with his remix of "Owner Of A Lonely Heart," but for the most part, he still concentrates on his progressive & trancey roots. He's still producing and DJ'ing these days, although he and Brad Copeland, another well-known Canadian DJ, also own iTechnique on Yonge Street in Toronto. Anyway, Max is the remixer here this week for the "Men in beats" track.

Marcie (US) - Marcie Joy has been working as a top-notch vocalist with an unbelievable number of world-class artists and producers in the past few years. Check out her discography and you'll see what I mean. Also, if you want to check out an interesting show, look up her "Behind The Lyric" series, which is a radio show & interview format with producers who explain the stories behind some of the lyrics that they've written and songs that they've produced. You can click here for a bit more info about David Akermanis.

Sultan and Ned Shepard (Canada) - These two producers are really starting to become global names these days. Another pair of Canada's formerly best kept secrets. What else can I say - combine an original track by one of my favorite producers (Morgan Page) with two great remixers, and you have a sure winner to wrap up this week's show.
