Welcome to this week's edition of Subterranean Homesick Grooves™, a weekly electronica-based radio show presented originally on CHMA FM 106.9 at Mount Allison University in Atlantic Canada (but expanded to a distribution on other terrestrial radio stations), and also distributed as a global podcast through iTunes and numerous other sites. The show is normally programmed and mixed by Jonathan Clark (as DJ Bolivia), although some weeks feature guest mixes by other Canadian DJ's. The show encompasses many sub-genres within the realm of electronic dance music, but the main focus is definitely on progressive and tribal house, and a small amount of trance & techno. Welcome to this week's edition of Subterranean Homesick Grooves™, a weekly electronica-based radio show presented originally on CHMA FM 106.9 at Mount Allison University in Atlantic Canada (but expanded to a distribution on other terrestrial radio stations), and also distributed as a global podcast through iTunes and numerous other sites. The show is normally programmed and mixed by Jonathan Clark (as DJ Bolivia), although some weeks feature guest mixes by other Canadian DJ's. The show encompasses many sub-genres within the realm of electronic dance music, but the main focus is definitely on progressive and tribal house, and a small amount of trance & techno. I think I'm having a music crisis. I can't figure out how to describe my music properly. For years, I played what I considered to be "progressive house" with trance influences. About a year ago, I started shifting the format of this show to be more of a tech-house format, with a dabbling of deep house, progressive, and techno. But here's the problem: I put together this week's episode on a barge in the North Atlantic. I was working there for a week, and I had no internet access, so I couldn't come up with new music for the show. I decided to root through my archives, and find a bunch of tracks or remixes that I hadn't used before. All of the music in this week's show is therefore music that's a couple years old, but this is what I call "progressive house." However, mainstream music sites don't seem to agree. I listen to "progressive house" on sites like Beatport, and I find that there isn't a whole lot that I really like. Has my taste in music changed? I don't think so. Is Beatport labelling their music incorrectly? Probably not. I guess that my definition of progressive house is just a bit more refined than theirs. What do you think? Do you prefer progressive house or tech-house? And how do you define them? Think about these questions while you're listening to this week's show ...
