When I mix these shows, I make them using CD's, rather than sequencing everything on a computer. I know, call me old-fashioned, but I like the hands-on approach. It was hard enough for me to switch away from vinyl, but of course, it is nearly impossible to get all the tracks that I want on vinyl nowadays. I think that in early 2011, once I have my new studio finished and I'm settled into a full-time career as a musician, I'll probably start putting the shows together on a sequencer. Especially since I want to figure out some way to get a slot for the show on Sirius XM next year, once I have a few dozen more shows under my belt. Think big, that's what I say. But anyway, in the meantime, you'll have to settle for all of these episodes mixed in the traditional way.

This week's show was actually a bit of a challenge to mix. I won't lie - a few of the mixes are not perfect. That's the problem with trying to be a bit diverse in my programming. I've got a variety of tracks this week which (to me) encompass everything from progressive house, trance, and traditional house, to techno influences, and more. Trying to flow smoothly between styles isn't always easy, especially when the phone keeps ringing while I'm recording. On a side note, now that I'm about to be laid off, I think that the one thing that I'm looking forward to the most is not having to carry a cell phone anymore.

Anyway, on to some liner notes. I'm just going to focus on the big four tracks here this week. I know, that seems illogical, since any devoted followers of my show probably know a fair amount about those producers. However, I think my listener base is still composed of more mainstream fans than trainspotters, so for this week, I'll stick with some of the big names:

Coburn (UK) – Well, the original that this is based on was an older track by Pete Martin and Tim Healey, from 2005. You may have seen the video for that original, “We Interrupt This Program” – it featured a lot of footage of televisions that were “committing suicide.” This track is sort of a remix. On a side note, completely unrelated to this track, I don’t actually have television at home. I have no patience with it – television is the spawn of the devil . I found a perverse satisfaction watching all of those TV’s being “turned off.” People could do so much more exciting stuff in life if they cut back on their TV watching. Everything in moderation. I’m not saying that television is completely bad, but it depresses me to think that some people spend forty or fifty hours a week watching TV when they could just as easily spend half of that time being out and about, doing other things. But whom am I to judge?

Deadmau5 (Canada) - Yup, a Canadian. I really don’t know what to say here that isn’t already slathered all over the internet. There are always lots of arguments on Canadian message boards about who is the Canadian DJ with the best “brand-name recognition.” People throw out all sorts of good names: Ritchie Hawtin, MSTRKRFT, John Acquaviva, & Max Graham are the names which, in my mind, give Deadmau5 the most competition. And of course, there are a TON of other Canadian DJ’s (and producers) who you might not have even known as Canadians: Luke Fair, Christian Smith, Tiga, Brad Copeland, Chris Sheppard (BKS, Love Inc.), Misstress Barbara, Hatiras, JELO, Paranoid Jack, Sultan, Ned Sheppard, Fred Everything, Jay Tripwire, and umm … I’ll stop now. And I haven’t even mentioned any of the Atlantic Canadian DJ’s. Anyway, you’d have to be crazy to look at items like global record sales, touring schedules, internet presence, radio play, and similar metrics, and NOT realize that Deadmau5 is “the” person who is currently putting Canada on the map when it comes to production and touring. End of argument (I would personally place Hawtin at 2nd spot). By the way, I know that Deadmau5 is Canadian and it’s a small country, but no, I don’t actually know him personally.

Dash Berlin (Netherlands) – Ok, this gets a bit complicated. Pronti & Kalmani, along with another producer (DJ Jurgen) and a vocalist (Judith Pronk) were known as Alice DJ about a decade ago. Pronti & Kalmani got together as Dash Berlin in 2007. Is this the same Dash Berlin? I don’t know. Other reports say that Dash Berlin is Jeff X. Sutorius, who is the front DJ for the group. And “Man On The Run” is by Dash Berlin with Cerf, Mitiska & Jaren. Well, “Cerf” is Matt Cerf (had a track entitled “Clearwater” which I used to start a mix a while ago), and Jaren is Matt Cerf’s wife (and a talented singer). Mitiska is Shawn Mitiska from Denver. So much confusion. Anyway, this is a great track.

Paul Kalkbrenner (Germany) – Go see the movie “Berlin Calling,” if you haven’t already seen it. If you don’t speak German, you’ll probably have to deal with subtitles. Doesn’t matter – watch it. If you like EDM (electronic dance music), you’ll probably enjoy the movie.

I usually try to post a few notes about some of the artists or producers featured in each show. However, I'm going to have to skip that for the most part this week. These days, I'm busier than a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest. Although I usually record the show a few days in advance, I only found time to record this episode a couple hours ago, at supper-time on Friday. As I type this, I have to be out the door and on my way to Halifax in twenty minutes, to film Felguk at the Paragon and then DJ Dan at the Palace. It should be a great night.

However, there is one quick comment that I'd like to make this week - I need to thank the guys at the Heavy Shorts website for putting me onto the Dennis Ferrer track several months ago. I haven't been able to get it out of my head since then, and I finally broke down and included it in this week's mix. The video is available on YouTube.

Here are a few notes about some of the artists or producers featured in this week's show:

Baldo (Italy) – Unfortunately, there are a few "Baldo’s" on MySpace, so make sure you find the right one. As long as you remember that this Baldo is from Italy, you’ll do just fine. You’ll also be impressed to know that he’s definitely one of the youngest producers I’ve played on my show yet, at just twenty years of ago.

DJ Heavygrinder (US) – Bobbie’s live shows are well known for her flamboyant stage presence and varied outfits, however, she is just as comfortable in a production environment as she is behind the decks, with several high energy house tracks to her credit in the past year or two. For anyone in the Halifax area tomorrow night (February 27th, 2010), you’ll be able to catch her playing at the Paragon on Gottingen Street. Also, I’ve got some footage from one of her former shows in Nova Scotia (at Reflections Caberet), which I’m just editing right now and should have on my main website by tomorrow.

Simon & Shaker (Spain) – The output of this duo is prodigious, to say the least – just look at their discography. You may wonder why I’m talking about them when they don’t have any tracks on this week’s show. Well, actually, Sundayprayers IS Simon & Shaker. I believe that S&S also had a record label with D-Formation at one point, Intenso Recordings, although I haven’t heard that name much recently. No matter – these guys have support from most of the biggest names in the industry.

DJ Dan (US) – Dan is the original face of the underground West Coast house music scene, where he spent the 1990's cementing his reputation as the best of the best, and also playing venues all over North America and the world. He also produces (remember classic hits like "That Zipper Track") and tours very extensively today. In fact, for those of you in Atlantic Canada, Dan is playing in Moncton on March 4th at the City Grill, and in Halifax on March 5th at the Palace.

EDX (Switzerland) – EDX has been extremely busy in the past year, after having taken several years off from producing just before that. This Italian native has two tracks on this week’s show if you look carefully, his own “Party Of Politics” track, and a remix of Dinka’s “Elements.” That’s no surprise with his hectic schedule: recently, he’s done remixes for Dubfire, Deadmau5, Armand van Helden, Steve Angello, Kool & The Gang, Lauryn Hill, Armin van Buuren, Kaskade, and many more.

Young Parisians (UK) – This is another duo who is harder to track down on MySpace, since there are a few other groups that go by the same name. If you do look at their link, it looks like they haven’t logged in since 2006. Don't worry: these Young Parisians are not so French, or sitting on the Champs-Élysées. Just look for info about Solar Stone, since Young Parisians is just an alias. This track originally came out in 2004, but the remixes are still getting major play. The Probspot remix would have fit in a bit better with the rest of this mix, but I really enjoy the Solar Stone Remix, so I put theirs into the show instead. Unfortunately, less than half of that remix fit into the show - it's a pretty long track. You can listen to the full mix on Beatport.


So long, farewell, I must bid you adieu. But before I go, if you're curious about who that [other] sexy voice is in the show doing all the promo voice-overs, it is Shawn Cole in Vancouver. He's a great friend, a former roommate, and a former DJ for me at my club. So if you need to hire someone to do any professional vocal work, go to his website and check him out. His studio is based in Vancouver, where he also teaches at a couple of the sound schools, but they have clients all over the world.

Here are a few notes up on some of the artists or producers featured in this week's show:

Radek K (Poland) - I mentioned Radek in last week's show because I closed that episode with one of his tracks, although I was running out of time so I was only able to fit a small part of it in. I thought I'd throw in a full track this week, and in listening to the show after the fact, I'm very glad I did. I think you can probably get this track on Beatport soon, if it isn't already there.

Dezza (Canada) - This is another producer that I mentioned last week, since he's a friend of mine from Halifax, very close to my home. Yet another solid production. I don't think this one has been released yet.

Cirez D (Sweden) - I used another of his tracks in last week's show, although this one was a request from someone on my facebook fan page. Even if you're not familiar with progressive house, you know this producer - his real name is Eric Prydz, ie. "Call On Me." He produces under several labels and pseudonyms. A quote from his MySpace page should sum up this track: "Releases on his more hard edge Mouseville records under the pseudonym Cirez D have been tough and powerful, a throwback to the underground techno roots his native Sweden have become famous for." And of course, he is a former member of the Swedish House Mafia.

Wolfgang Gartner (US) - Bueller? Bueller? Gartner has been huge on BPM (Sirius) and just about everywhere else for quite a while now. He played in Halifax not too long ago, and regrettably, I didn't get a chance to catch his set or meet him. "Latin Fever" is obviously pretty well known right now. For all the budding producers out there, check out the "Latin Fever" remix contest announced on Beatport last week.

Funkagenda (UK) - What's this, a Moby theme in his music? Well, this makes a pair that I know of, and it's a fine pair, if "you know what is what." It's too bad that nobody listens to techno, but you should listen to Funkagenda.

Retroid (Hungary) - This track was a lifesaver. I recorded this mix during the Canada/Switzerland olympic hockey game, and although I usually pick out most of the tracks before I head to the decks and mix them, I didn't realize before I started mixing this week's show that I didn't have enough tracks to fill a full hour. Halfway through the second-last track, I realized I was short, and panicked because I wanted to end the mix with "Love Story." So I grabbed a random CD with no label or name, and mixed it in. It was Retroid's "Chasing Rainbows" track, which was on System in 2008. Well, it worked quite well in the mix, although it took me a couple hours to figure out what track I had just used.

Nadia Ali (Pakistan/US) - Most people know Nadia as the voice behind "Rapture" and "The End," when she was fronting iiO. It's a voice you'll never forget, and this classic remix by Dave Dresden and Mikael Johnston is a great track to leave you wanting more for next week. Incidentally, Dave (formerly of Gabriel & Dresden) and Mikael (formerly of Mephisto Odyssey) just started up a fan page on Facebook - check it out, since they have a lot of great tracks in the works.

SHG Radio Show Episode 005

Here we are with episode number five of Subterranean Homesick Grooves™, which is a weekly electronica-based radio show presented on CHMA FM 106.9 at Mount Allison University in Atlantic Canada, programmed and mixed by DJ Bolivia. Although the show will encompass many sub-genres within the realm of electronic dance music, the main focus will be on progressive and tribal house, and a bit of trance. After I re-listened to last week's show, I noticed that it was kind of "dark." With so few vocals, it didn't really fit the style of the previous three shows, which had featured about fifty percent vocal tracks. I'm not saying that tracks without vocals are a bad thing - quite the contrary! But regardless, you'll notice that this week's show does feature a lot more vocal tracks, and is closer in format to previous episodes. Liner notes for this episode (005) can be seen below.

From now on, I’ll try to throw a few notes up on some of the artists or producers featured in each show:

Felguk (Brazil) - A production duo comprised of Felipe Lozinsky and Gustavo Rozentha. Lots of great electro-house productions with fat basslines and wicked beats. This duo has really blown up since 2006. For any local Atlantic Canadians reading this, Felguk is playing at the Paragon (the old Marquis) in Halifax on March 5th, a Friday night, and at Evolution in Saint John the following night.

Morgan Page (United States) – Definitely one of my favourite producers, especially for tracks in the past couple of years such as “The Longest Road” (featuring Lissie) and “Angels” (featuring Norah Jones). His new track, “Fight For You,” is huge.

Dezza (Canada) – Definitely one of my favourite local producers. Dezza (Derek Silvestre) is from Halifax, and has enjoyed recent support from DJ’s such as Tiesto, PVD, and many more. One of several local guys who is really putting Atlantic Canada on the map in the electronic music scene.

Josh Gabriel (the Netherlands) – Since the collaboration between Gabriel & Dresden ended almost two years ago (has it really been that long?), both Josh & Dave Dresden have been working tirelessly on new projects. Josh is now living in Amsterdam, and has been doing a lot of work recently with Armanda Music. To be honest, Josh was a very big inspiration for me a few years ago, and some of the unsolicited positive feedback that I got from him about some of my DJ mixes helped me realize that within a year or so, I needed to change my focus in life to emphasize music a lot more. I’m still in the middle of that metamorphosis, but looking forward to big things on the production front within a year.

Alejandro Montreo (Argentina) – a friend of mine from Buenos Aires, Alejandro did a great job remixing this classic track.

Paco Buggin (Spain) & Joy Marquez (Mexico) – these two producers continually impress me with their progressive & tribal productions. In fact, I love the amount of well-produced progressive house that comes out of Spain and Latin America as a whole.

Radek K (Poland) – I’ve known Radek for a few years now, and he has recently broadened his focus to expand from just DJ’ing, so that he now also spends quite a bit of time on production. Some of his recent productions are listed on Beatport, and you’ll be sure to hear more of his remixes & originals on my show in the future.

Now that we've got the kinks worked out of the podcast feeds and blog feeds, each future episode will be an entirely brand-new and previously unreleased mix. In this particular episode, some of my favorite tracks are "You See" (Nestor Delano) and "I Want You" (Dean Coleman). Both are new releases, and completely different styles, with "You See" being mostly instrumental and "I Want You" being a vocal track. I'm also a big fan of the Aqualize track, although it's an older one. You'll notice that this week's mix is predominantly non-vocal. That's just the way it came out. I don't really plan these shows out to match any sort of theme, so don't assume that the lack of vocals is indicative of the future direction of most of my mixes. If I think that the music is good, I'll play it, no matter what the specific characteristics are. Gabriel & Dresden's final DJ set at WMC 2008

If you know anything about dance/house music from the past decade, you’ve probably heard of Gabriel & Dresden. They won dozens of IDMA’s from 2005-2008, releasing a couple dozen #1 hits on the Billboard Dance charts, either as their own releases, or as remixes for other top artists such as Armin van Buuren, the Killers, Jewel, Way Out West, Madonna, Markus Shulz, Rachal Starr, Paul Oakenfold, New Order, Tiesto, Annie Lennox, Nalin & Kane, Sarah McLachlan, Coldplay, Deborah Cox, and Britney Spears. Well, maybe not all of those didn’t make it to number one, but many of them definitely did. Their music has helped define a generation of dance floor fans.

G&D’s last official show together happened at the Winter Music Conference (WMC) in Miami in 2008, at The Pawn Shop. Dave Dresden recently released a recording of that set, which is the whole point of this post. 

 

I was really disappointed to hear that they had stopped collaborating together. Their last live show together outside of WMC was (to the best of my knowledge) a night at Pacha in NYC. I was actually supposed to videotape that show, because I was working on producing a short video promo for them. On the flights there, I got delayed by a snowstorm in Toronto and missed my connection by about two minutes, so I didn’t actually make it down to that show. Needless to say, it was one of the most disappointing moments of my life. At the time, I thought that I could make it up at a future show. In retrospect, it was one of those opportunities that you never get to have a second time.

Perhaps it is better that they started working independently? Both are incredibly talented, and I'm pretty confident that after a bit of experimenting and reassessment, both of their careers will benefit from the new direction. There is no doubt that their work as a team was incredible, but like anything, change is inevitable, and people who embrace change can benefit. My take on their partnership was that Josh was always a strong producer first and foremost, and Dave’s strength was always as being a superb DJ who could read a dance floor. But that would be a gross over-simplification - in the past twelve months, Dave has already charged head-first into churning out dance-floor anthems, and Josh Gabriel has been confidently exploring his own space both as a DJ and producer.


Dave is now working on a new collaborative project with Mikael Johnston (formerly of the California trance/house group Mephisto Odyssey). Already, they’ve done some major remixes for Nadia Ali, BT, JD Webb, The Crystal Method, and Lily Allen. Their remix of Lily Allen’s “The Fear” is great, and I’ve really been enjoying that remix for some time since I first heard it on one of Dave’s monthly promo mixes. Here’s a link to the video:

Anyway, although I am very excited about their new independent careers and the tracks that they'll both be producing, I'll have to admit that it's nice to listen to another of their sets from back in the day. I was lucky enough to have seen them performing in several venues in 2006-2008: Phoenix, Boston, Edmonton & New York. But of course, their last set at The Pawn Shop will go down in the history books.
