Warping Tracks in Ableton Live, for DJ'ing

I just put together an hour-long tutorial video to teach people how to warp tracks in Ableton Live, for the purpose of either performing live, or for putting together DJ mixes. Here's the video:

Essentially, this is a very basic video, so as long as you have a bit of familiarity with any type of audio editing software out there, and a basic knowledge of dance music and DJ'ing, you should be able to understand exactly what I'm teaching. After that, a bit of practice with a few dozen songs, and you should know exactly how to set your tracks up in Ableton.

Once you have tracks that are warped, you'll probably want to either perform live, or use the technology to put together DJ mixes. For my weekly radio show, Subterranean Homesick Grooves, I usually take one of three approaches to putting together a show:

1. Perform live and record the mix, while playing on either pitch-controlled CD players (I have CDJ-2000's) or on vinyl with turntables (I have Technics SL-1200 M3D's). Of the three ways to put together a show, this approach is the most fun and takes the most skill, although sometimes I won't be happy with a mix the first time, and I'll re-record the entire thing.

2. Set up the tracks in Ableton, and then perform live using Ableton and a Xone 4D mixer, with effects set up in Ableton and the MIDI controls on the mixer tied in to the Ableton effects devices. This approach is also pretty fun, and good because it's impossible to screw up your beat-mixing.

3. Set up the track in Ableton, and then lay them out in the Arrangement view instead of performing live, and use automation to control all the effects and volumes and EQ'ing. This does not enhance your skills as a DJ, and it doesn't let you show off your live mixing abilities. However, I have to use this approach to put together a fair number of my radio shows, because when I'm on the road without equipment, I can use this approach to put together a show in a hotel room.

This warping video ONLY focuses on how to warp your tracks, because it's such as important part of using Ableton for DJ'ing. It needed to be a video of its own. However, over the next few weeks/months, I'm going to put together several additional videos to illustrate how to create mixes using each of the three approaches that I've outlined above, as well as a video that just generally teaches you how to set up a mixer and Ableton and use it for live DJ'ing.

Some of you are probably quite familiar with Ableton already and may find that most of this video is too basic, but remember that I have to make sure that people who aren't familiar with the software can understand the basics. I've been putting this show together while doing some work at a new studio in Vancouver. It's pretty exciting to realize that next week is the 100th episode of this radio show. STU Graffiti Party, 2012

I just played at the Holy Cross Graffiti Party at STU this past weekend in Fredericton. As always, the crowd was great and I had a lot of fun.

The set was done on CDJ players, not through Ableton. I didn't record it, but I did write down a set list below. It was a very mainstream/top40 sort of event, and I played requests for most of the night. I ended up playing about 17 or 18 requests, and unfortunately I had requests for four songs that I didn't have (well, one that was an inappropriate genre at the time, one track that I didn't have, and two tracks that I couldn't identify based on the possibly-inaccurate titles that I was given). I played some downtempo tracks (mostly classic hip hop) for the first hour, and the dance floor was pretty packed for the last two hours, when I played a lot of older top40 hits (these were mostly requests).

Bolivia: Live at the Pump NightClub, Saint John

This past Friday night, I played at the Pump nightclub in Saint John, New Brunswick. I took some video and recorded my set, which I'll be sharing later in this post.

To give you some background on the set, I told Fred Bissnette that I wanted to bring an Allen & Heath Xone 4D mixer and do an Ableton Live set using the mixer as an audio mixer, but also using the MIDI controls at the same time to control many of the effects/controls in Ableton.

I decided to play a set of classic house tracks. And I'm serious when I say that; I really dug up some older classics, a la Nexus6ix and Tommy Knuckles style (for those of you from Atlantic Canada). Many of the tracks were released between 1995 and 2003. I couldn't find electronic copies of a lot of them, so although a few were bought from Beatport, I actually got most of these by ripping digital copies from my own old vinyl records. Unfortunately, the quality isn't "wave" quality for all of the tracks in the set, but I think that just adds to the authenticity of the set.

As usual, I was running late and didn't have as much time as I would have liked to prep before the show. It was a two-hour drive to get to Saint John, but luckily one of my friends (Ian Allen) was driving, so I had that time in the car to prep for the set on my laptop. I warped the tracks and barely had time to set up some basic effects - enough to get me started. I expanded on the layout of the session once I got into the club and started playing.

Here's a quick two-minute video that roughly explains how things were organized once I first got set up. As mentioned in the video, I set things up to be a bit more complex as I was playing, and added some extra mapping and processing:

I was going through the tracks a bit faster than I should have. I probably could have played the same music as a three hour set, instead of the slightly-under-two-hours that it was. To be honest, although rushing through the tracks led to a bit more variety and entertainment for the dance floor, I really think the set would have sounded better if I had mixed it over a longer period (less melodic overlaps and disharmonies in the key signatures). Also, the set is FAR more "busy" than I would play if I was playing progressive or tech-house, where I really aim for smooth mixes. The energy levels are high here, and there is a lot of chaos.

There's a good track in this week's mix that indirectly commemorates Martin Luther King's birthday, which is on January 15th. The track samples King's last speech, and if you listen to it, it's very prophetic, considering his assassination after the speech, on April 4th of 1968. It's also a very powerful and moving speech.

Using Spotify in Canada

It seems that user awareness of the Spotify music service is pretty low in Canada. That's not surprising, considering that the service isn't available in Canada or about 182 other countries around the world.

Spotify is a music streaming service offering streaming of selected music from a range of major and independent record labels, including Sony, EMI, Warner Music Group, and Universal. As of a couple months ago, it had about ten million users worldwide. It recently got a lot of publicity due to its endorsements from Facebook, and its increasing integration with Facebook. The service supposedly hosts about fifteen million songs at the moment, although it has a few notable exceptions as I'll explain below.

Basically, Spotify allows for a free subscription, although the free service limits users to ten hours per month of streaming, and for each song to be streamed a maximum of only five times. The free service also streams at a lower bit-rate, and inserts some advertising. There is also a premium service which costs around $10/month - that upgrade offers unlimited streaming, no advertising, and higher bit-rates (supposedly 320 kbps for the majority of songs). It appears that about a quarter of Spotify users have premium accounts.

The main problem with Spotify (especially for Canadians, and residents of a ton of other countries) is that the company had to negotiate royalty agreements in each country. They've had problems with this project (not surprisingly), and so at the moment, Spotify is only available to users in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Faroe Islands, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.

I was curious to try Spotify, so I started playing with some ideas today. First, I needed to be able to download and install the software. The Spotify website can detect what IP you're using, and therefore it knows what country you're in. If you're in a country that doesn't support Spotify, you're out of luck. So the first thing I did was to download and install a program called "Hide My IP" from www.hide-my-ip.com. They have a fourteen-day trial version available - I'd recommend that you use that for now, instead of the $29.95 full version. There is one drawback with the trial version: it adds a considerable delay to your browsing, of between five to twenty seconds per page. But although this is annoying, it's irrelevant for this experiment. Once you have Hide My Ip running, check the box that says "use US-based IP's only." Then, when you go back to the Spotify website, you can actually download the Spotify software. Spotify ONLY checks the IP when you're downloading the software. After you have Spotify installed and running, you can turn off and delete Hide My IP.

The Spotify interface is very similar to iTunes. My goal this afternoon was to play with it a bit and see how it works. I was able to do that after using the Hide My IP trick to get the software installed. I'm not going to bother going into detail about the actual Spotify software, because you can read reviews elsewhere, or try it yourself. My only quick comment is that it works and its pretty cool, and $10 per month for the premium service seems like it would be a good deal compared to buying songs through iTunes. One minor drawback though - some songs are not available in some countries, or not available at all, due to licensing restrictions. For instance, because of the agreement that iTunes has with the holders of all the Beatles copyrights, there are no Beatles songs available on Spotify.

Now, here's the next problem. I was going to buy the premium service, so I could really get a better opinion of how it worked. However, I did some digging before I signed up, and it appears that in order to sign up for the premium service, you need a credit card that is registered in one of the supported countries. Again, systems are meant to be circumvented. I considered logging into my banking through my browser, temporarily changing my address on my credit card account to a friend or relative in the States (pretty much everyone in Canada can figure out a US address this way), then signing up for Spotify premium, then changing my credit card address back to Canada. Well, after I thought about that, I decided that probably wasn't possible, because I'm sure that the Big Five Canadian banks don't allow customers to have US mailing addresses, unless maybe you go into the branch to ask them to make the change. So for the short term, that idea appeared to be a dead end. It might, however, be possible to get an American relative to sign up for the service just to get the account set up, then to go in and manually change the payment info to your own Canadian credit card. But of course, this is a bit more involved and requires you to have a relative/friend in the States that is willing to do that - most people would be pretty reluctant to expose their own credit cards to something like this. Mind you, you might be able to give them cash in advance for a year's subscription. Or maybe you have an American relative asking what you'd like for your birthday or Christmas. Depends on your situation. BUT WAIT! Let's try an easier approach, which will work if you use PayPal and have a Canadian PayPal account.

First, set up a US PayPal account using one of your email addresses and an American mailing address (any will do). Next, send some money from your Canadian PayPal account to your US PayPal account (since linking to your credit cards or bank account won't work). Once you have the money for Spotify in your US PayPal account, you can sign up for the Spotify Premium service and pay for it through that US PayPal account. See ... there's always a solution to any problem.

Well, that's all I have to say about Spotify so far. If you're into music and you're curious about it like I was, you no longer have to wait until it's available in Canada. As long as you have a Facebook account, you can sign up for it quite quickly, and if you don't mind going through twenty minutes of effort through PayPal, you can even buy the premium service.

Just one minor word of warning ... because Hide My IP imposes the delay, and because Spotify accesses your Facebook account when you sign up, you could run into a minor side effect. If you have mobile notifications turned on with Facebook when you do this, the IP delay will cause not one, but SEVERAL texts being sent to your mobile from Facebook, notifying you that Spotify is trying to access your account. In fact, Facebook sent me 46 texts in the space of about a minute. I assume that this wouldn't be a problem if you had the paid version of Hide My IP, OR if you temporarily turn off mobile notifications from Facebook while you set up Spotify, or if you have unlimited texting on your phone so you don't get charged for a bunch of texts.

This Is Our Dream House, Volume 2 (Deep House Mix)

Do you enjoy listening to deep house? Well, judging by the phenomenal positive response to my first "This Is Our Dream House" mix, there must be a lot of fans out there.

I started to put this mix together in November, but of course got distracted with some other projects over the holidays in Canada. I was going to add a deep house track that I've been working on with David Anthony, but I decided this morning that I should put that track on the next instalment of this series instead, so I could publish this mix today. There's no point including the track that Davy and I are working on unless the video for the track is also ready.

For those of you who aren't normally into EDM (electronic dance music), you might be curious to know the differences between my regular style of progressive/tech-house and this deep house mix. Actually, there aren't always a lot of obvious differences, because I lean a bit more towards the techy side of deep house than the pure organic stuff. So at first, this might just sound a bit like my usual style, but slower. But that would be far from accurate - the deep house in this set can be identified by a few significant differences. First, the instrumentation is often jazzier, ie. there will be Rhodes or Wurli keyboards, more horns, brass, more clean guitar sounds, and more jazzy/bluesy vocals. Also, the tempo of this set is down around 118-120bpm, whereas my mainstream club sets are usually around 128bpm and my radio shows are usually 129-132bpm.

Ok, it finally feels like the holidays are over. I'm back to work on music, with a whole lot of projects happening right now. My classes have started again, I've reorganized the server and SoundCloud feeds for the back episodes of SHG, I'm uploading a new four-hour deep house mix today (This Is Our Dream House, volume 2), I'm working on a new track with David Anthony, I did some filming last night with Fred Bisnette of Saint John for a YouTube tutorial about changing pitch faders in Tech 12 turntables, working on another couple tracks with hip hop vocalist Curtis Michaelis, and ... well, the list goes on. To be able to better serve listeners on the net, I made the plunge this week and started to upload all of the archived episodes of SHG to my regular SoundCloud account. I usually get about 1500 listeners a week (based on download data) through iTunes and through the podcast feed, and last week I only had about a hundred listeners through SoundCloud. So the majority of the listening base is still accessing the show through the podcast, but an extra outlet can't hurt. We'll see how it develops in the next few weeks, but I definitely anticipate continuing to post both on my regular ISP and on SoundCloud, and I expect the SoundCloud traffic to grow.

Anne Savage & Max Graham: "House, Drum, & Bass"

I posted a link to this mix a while ago, but had to take it down eventually when I switched ISP's and wasn't able to store quite as many mixes on my server. But I was tidying up some music drives this afternoon and found this mix again, so I just uploaded it to MixRiot and I thought I'd reincarnate this blog posting. It's probably my favorite DJ mix of the past decade, so it seems fitting to post it on a New Year's Eve.

I talked to Max Graham about this mix a while ago, and he said that he and Anne made it as a promo mix, back in the Atomic Nightclub (Ottawa) days. Therefore, I'm guessing that they made it between 1996 and 1998, not too long before I started listening to it. All it was called was "House, Drum & Bass," and that's exactly what type of music it was.

As I said, this mix is one of my favorite mixes of all time. It had a huge influence on me as a DJ, even though I technically started DJ'ing about twelve or thirteen years before it was made. At the time I first heard it, I was DJ'ing at the university bar occasionally, playing mainstream dance tracks (think of the Much Dance series), but this mix helped broaden my appreciation of different electronica genres. Although Max Graham lived in England and Spain and the US while growing up, he ended up in Ottawa as a mainstream DJ in one club, and then after switching focus, he worked with some partners to open his own club (Atomic) in around 1996. His history as a DJ and producer is quite interesting. I had to buy some of his early productions such as Airtight, Shoreline, and Falling Together a couple times, because I essentially wore out the vinyl on my original copies. His sound was usually a trancy sort of progressive house, and was a big influence on my DJ'ing around 2000-2004 (as you can tell when looking at track listings of a lot of my early demos). I guess a lot of people know him because of his remix of "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" (below), which was very well done, although I prefer his trancier style.

Anne Savage is a DJ from the UK who established herself solidly with a number of heavy hitters in the early 1990's, playing regular residencies with people like Sasha, Laurent Garnier, and Tony De Vit. She's been involved with Ministry of Sound Radio, BBC1, and MTV Europe, and she's played cities and festivals all over the world. Her discography lists some of her work, either alone or in collaborations, although unlike Max, she focuses more on DJ'ing than on production work. She usually plays a pretty hard house style. It's past 8am as I write this. I just got back from playing a show in Halifax along with David Anthony for the "Halifax Classics" crowd. Then venue shut the music off at 3:30am when all the police cars arrived outside, but I'm sure that otherwise, it would still be going. People say that the "young kids" have all the energy, but that crowd of people know how to party, and know how to dance from the time the music starts until the last song fades away. I think I might make a "classics" house mix on New Year's Day, using some of the music that we played tonight. It was also good to see some of my old friends at the event, other talented DJ's such as Nick Nonsense, Sean Keating, and Jay Hamilton. And dozens of other friends.

Christmas Night Party at Club 981

I played the annual Christmas night party at Club 981 in Neguac (near Miramichi) again the other night. What a party. I did this last year too. I would have expected that not a lot of people would come out to party on a Christmas night, but that was a mistaken assumption.

I've got a set list below, for anyone who was at the event and is trying to figure out some of the songs that I was playing. I assume that people would have known all the tracks from the last hour and a half, but maybe not some of the songs in the first half of the evening. I started out with a bit of rock & even a couple country songs, then moved into current pop music. However, when I started getting into dance music, everyone started requesting "classic" mainstream hits, so after the Lady Gaga track that I played, I gave up trying to play newer music and just went with songs that were a couple years old. As a DJ, it's good to play what the crowd wants to here.

For anyone in Halifax, I'll be playing a show with David Anthony on Thursday evening. This should be fun ... we used to DJ together pretty frequently about ten years ago, back in the days of vinyl, but we haven't played together in a decade. That show will not be mainstream/pop - look for a classic house set on Thursday evening.

Gabriel & Dresden

Yesterday was the birthday of one of my old roommates, and a former DJ at the club that I ran, so I ended up taking him out to a Gabriel & Dresden show in Las Vegas. It was at the Lavo club at the Palazzo. Nice place.

Gabriel & Dresden took a slight break from touring together in 2009/2010, but they've been pretty busy the last eight or ten months, with appearances in more than a dozen countries. I've seen six or seven of their shows in the past. I was even supposed to see them and do some filming at a show in New York that turned out to be their "last" show before their break, but I missed a flight connection by ten minutes due to snow in Canada, and lost that opportunity. That was one of my most disappointing moments in a long time.

Last night's show at Lavo was the best one that I've seen. They are definitely on their game these days. They've got a pretty versatile set-up - Josh works predominantly on Ableton Live (where he can create unique remixes on-the-fly), and Dave occasionally uses Ableton but is completely at home with CDJ's. The only thing that I thought was odd last night was that they shared the same pair of headphones. Dave usually had them on, but Josh occasionally borrowed them. I would think that they'd use a headphone splitter cord and each have a set of their own. Anyway, I saw the entire set (about three hours) and it was tight. I especially enjoyed the remix or layering of the Eleanor Rigby vocals in their set. The only regret about the show for me is that I didn't think to write down a set list, since I recognized just about every song they played.

G&D are so influential that two of their productions are in the top ten of the 2010 edition of the Trance Top 1000 tracks of all time ("As The Rush Comes" at position #3, and their remix of Above & Beyond's "No One On Earth"). They were also voted as America's best DJ's a couple of times. If you want to learn a bit more about the duo, check out this article on wikipedia, which also has a pretty impressive discography.

Here are YouTube videos for a few of their more well-known songs that have real videos (many of their other hits don't). You'll notice that Dave and Josh sometimes work with other vocalists under different names such as Motorcycle, Andain, etc.

I didn't really expect to be putting another Workout Music mix together this quickly after the last one, but I woke up early this morning and I was looking at some of the music charts, and I just felt like I was in the mood to make this mix. A few of the songs are the left-overs from the summer, tracks which I didn't use on Mix #06, but most of these are pretty well-known now, or just coming up the charts.

DJ Mag Canada - Free Subscription

This is going to be of interest to any Canadian DJ's or music producers who are reading this, or any real dance music fans in Canada. DJ Mag is starting a Canadian-focused version of their magazine in early 2012.

The Canadian magazine will be digital-only for now, however, it will have a mix of global content with a lot of Canada-specific info. And what's more interesting, they're offering free subscriptions at the moment, to any interested Canadians.

This is actually a real promotion. I was a bit suspicious at first, so I talked to Simon Heath, the advertising director of the official print magazine in England. It's legitimate. All you have to do is give them your contact info (limited time only, probably only another couple weeks) and they'll add you to their distribution list.

I've been subscribed to the British print version of DJ Mag for ages. If you aren't familiar with the magazine but think you might have heard the name before, they're the ones who do the annual Top 100 DJ's poll every fall, which is recognized as THE official global ranking on DJ's. Ahhh! Yes, that magazine.

Anyway, if you're into music with beats and want some monthly reading material, you've got nothing to lose by signing up. They cover DJ's in a wide variety of genres: house, trance, techno, dubstep, drum 'n' bass, breakbeats, electro, ambient, deep house, tribal, garage, and more. Here's the link:

The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald

"The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" is one of Canada's most well-known folk songs of the past few decades, written and performed by Gordon Lightfoot. It was written about a cargo ship that sunk in Lake Superior on November 10th of 1975. I'm sitting here waiting for the local forestry office to open, and I was reminded of the song a few times this week, so I thought I'd write a little bit about it.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was often referred to as "Big Fitz." It was an ore carrier that sailed on Lake Superior for seventeen years before it sank, and set haul records for six of those seventeen years. Due to its size, it was also sometimes referred to as the "Titanic of the Great Lakes." How fitting.

Grant Williams, a financial analyst, wrote about the ship a few weeks ago in one of his newsletters. Here's what he had to say:

Big Fitz ... was the Great Lakes freighter that carried taconite from Duluth to the iron works in the then-thriving Detroit, Michigan and Toledo, Ohio.

When she was launched in 1958, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald was the largest boat on the Great Lakes. 729 feet long with a 75ft beam and a 25 foot draft, she could carry 26,000 DWT in her 33' 4”deep hold. Powered by a Coal fired Westinghouse Electric Corporation steam turbine 2 cylinder, she had a top speed of 14 knots and carried a crew of 29.

On November 9, 1975, Big Fitz was loaded with 26,116 tons of taconite iron ore pellets in Superior, Wisconsin and embarked on what would tragically turn out to be her final voyage - a routine crossing of Lake Superior, bound for a steel mill in Detroit, Michigan.

The next day, November 10th, Big Fitz found herself caught in the midst of a massive winter storm, with 35 ft waves and hurricane force winds. Captain Ernest McSorely, a 44-year veteran, made contact with the Avafor, a nearby ship, and reported that he had encountered “one of the worst seas he had ever been in”.

A couple of hours later, with Big Fitz roughly 17 miles from the relative safety of Whitefish Bay at the northeastern tip of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, another ship made contact and was told that the Titanic of The Great Lakes was holding her own. Then something strange happened ... the Fitzgerald disappeared from radar screens.

(Incidentally, Grant was comparing the Euro to the Edmund Fitzgerald).

Let's listen to the song:

Many Canadians know a lot of the lines to the song by heart. Let's look at a few of them. As with most folk tales, some are rooted in fact and some use a bit of artistic license:

With a load of iron ore, twenty-six thousand tons more than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty.

This seems to be pretty accurate, if the other comment about carrying 26,116 tons of pellets is true.

When suppertime came the old cook came on deck and said fellas it's too rough to feed ya.

Well, since there was no communication with the ship in this kind of detail, who knows what the old cook said. And incidentally, it was a "new cook" - the regular cook was sick and missed the voyage.

Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms, when they left fully loaded for Cleveland.

Not quite accurate; they were headed for Detroit at the time.

The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay, if they'd put fifteen more miles behind her.

The ship sank only seventeen miles away from the safety of Whitefish Bay.

The captain wired in he had water comin' in, and the good ship and crew was in peril.

Actually, there was no indication that there was any trouble until the ship disappeared off the radar screens.

Another reason why I was thinking about this song recently is because we were studying it in one of my music production classes at Berklee this week. The key is interesting, because it's written in B Dorian rather than A Major. Dorian keys are minor keys which sound moody and gloomy. Basically, for Dorian, you drop the third and seventh degrees of the scale by a half-tone each, so it's like a B Major but with a D natural and an A natural. It's hard to hold the intent of the key in a Dorian, so you have to use the tonic frequently (the B chord at the beginning and end of each verse), to counter the tendency to resolve to A major.

Oasis Radio from Osaka

If you're one of those people who is always looking for new DJ's to check out, and new online sources of good EDM, I've got a suggestion for you. Check out this site:

Basically, Oasis Radio is a free web radio station based in Osaka, Japan, which broadcasts underground electronic music from selected local and international DJ's. It was started by a friend of mine, Dan Elliot, who originally came from New Brunswick. Another key figure at the station is Shawn Young, another New Brunswicker. I was introduced to these guys several years ago by a mutual friend, Ian Warney.

The philosophy and origins of the station can be best summed up by these words from Dan:

"It’s pretty simple, really. Find timeless music that reaches deep down to touch the soul, enlist DJs and producers whose passion and vision shine brighter than any false star, use technology that transcends the tyranny of time and distance, and make a humble aural offering to the city that made you and the people that saved you. It’s an idea built on the legacy of Oasis Lounge - a little bar in an out-of-the-way part of Osaka where a few partiers around town would immerse themselves in the company of warm souls and refreshing music. The bar has since closed, but from June of 2009, the music streams 24/7 globally – free web radio of, by and for Osaka’s vibrant electronic dance music community."

I played at the Oasis Lounge when I was visiting Osaka several years ago. I was a bit overwhelmed by my travel schedule and jet lag at the time, so I didn't bother to record any of what I played (although I was much more awake when I played at Velours in Tokyo the following week, and that set is online here). Dan was my host at the Oasis Lounge, and it was definitely a unique and fun bar that I'll never forget. And Dan's Lychee cocktails may still reign supreme as my favorite drink of all time.

Dan hosts a regular show on Oasis called "Progressions." Shawn hosts a regular show called "Hibiki." And there are also a few dozen other DJ's that have shows, with lots of variety. As I write this, I'm holed up in a motel just outside of Jasper National Park, due to a bit of a snowstorm. I'm staying at a place called the Tete Jaune Lodge. I spend a lot of time on the road in motels, and I have to say that this place is awesome. It has great rates, it is far more nicely furnished than I would have expected, and the owner, Ted Davis, was great to talk to. And to top it all off, the internet is fast. This is definitely my favorite place out of the thirty-some motels that I've stayed at in the last six weeks, and I'll keep this in mind for future travels on the Yellowhead between British Columbia and Alberta.

Upbeat Workout Music, Mix #06

This mix is long overdue. I started to put it together in July, but I got a bit sidetracked. I like to try to use music in these workout mixes that I think is going to become popular a few months down the road. Since I picked out half of these tracks in July, they've already reached (or passed) the point of being pretty popular, but I wanted to use them anyway. At least there are a few tracks in here which I just added in the past week.

I actually had a pretty big list of tracks to choose from for this mix, and had to omit almost as many as I used. That's good, because it means that I'll be able to try to "catch up" the backlog quite soon and put together another workout mix in late November or early December.

I was recently contacted by Chris Lawhorn. If you're not familiar with that name at the moment, he writes for Men's Journal, and has a workout music blog at www.RunHundred.com. I recommend that you check it out when you get the chance. You can sign up for a free monthly email where you'll get a list of suggestions for good workout tunes to check out, as voted upon by blog readers. He also offers a service where you can pick a number of songs and hire him to create your own continuous DJ mix with the specific songs that you've picked, which is pretty innovative.

This Is Our Dream House, Volume 01

A few months ago I was asked to play a deep house set in Las Vegas. I enjoy deep house, but I rarely play live sets in that style as a DJ. However, that show went well, and I got a phenomenal amount of positive feedback about the set after I posted it online. Especially important was the fact that Marc Carnes, a former room-mate of mine (and the foremost deep house expert that I'm close friends with) gave it his stamp of approval.

I was talking to him afterwards about the set, and I decided that I'd like to share more of this kind of music with my DJ fans. So I've decided to start creating a deep house mix series. It's going to be an ambitious project. I'm probably only going to release a new mix about once every two months, but each mix is going to be four hours long, suitable for an evening of relaxing and enjoying the music properly.

I've decided to call this mix, "This Is Our Dream House." That's partly because the mix is a variety of house music, partly because deep house is often dreamy, and partly because I found a really cool graphic with that exact title to use for the cover, courtesy of Sam Brown at the Exploding Dog website. As my regular fans know, I'm a long-time fan of his art.

For those of you who aren't normally into EDM (electronic dance music), you might be curious to know the differences between my regular style of progressive/tech-house and this deep house mix. Actually, there aren't always a lot of obvious differences, because I lean a bit more towards the techy side of deep house than the pure organic stuff. So at first, this might just sound a bit like my usual style, but slower. But that would be far from accurate - the deep house in this set can be identified by a few significant differences. First, the instrumentation is often jazzier, ie. there will be Rhodes or Wurli keyboards, more horns, brass, more clean guitar sounds, and more jazzy/bluesy vocals. Also, the tempo of this set is down around 118-120bpm, whereas my mainstream club sets are usually around 128bpm and my radio shows are usually 131-134bpm.

When I played in Las Vegas, my set was a bit disjointed, because it was a fairly last-minute booking and I didn't have time to get to know the music well. Programming is the most important thing when it comes to DJ'ing. Sure, mixing tracks properly makes a DJ sound better, but programming involves picking out good music to start with, and then coming up with a suitable flow. For the Vegas set at the Castles, I had good music, but my flow was fairly random. At least with this mix, I was able to think carefully about the order of the tracks that I used. Equally important, while I cut out a lot of the quiet sections and added extra drums for the Castles set (which seemed more appropriate for a live room), with this mix I'm leaving the tracks almost entirely unchanged except for a few select edits. You'll hear quieter passages in this mix too, not just the steady beats. But a side note for the audio engineers out there: I did compress the mix in Cubase at a pretty high ratio of 3.0, with makeup gain to bring it to -2 dB final, to give a more consistent volume for listeners in cars and other distracting environments.

I find that, as a DJ, I rarely get time to listen to music "for fun" because I'm always doing research and being pretty analytical. However, last night, I was driving and someone in the truck asked to hear one of my radio show episodes. I played one at a good volume, uninterrupted for a full hour while driving through the desert at night under a nearly full moon, and it reminded me that these mixes are really great driving music. Over the past few years, quite a few people have asked me what my all-time favorite DJ mix was. The answer was simple, and surprisingly, not a "dance music" mix, at least not in the EDM sense. A few years ago, a Canadian DJ named Mike Gleeson put together a continuous DJ mix composed entirely of rock/pop tracks from the 1980's and early 1990's. Trust me, if you like 80's tracks, you will absolutely love that mix.

I feel like he got a lot of pressure to create a follow-up mix. I certainly wanted him to, since his first mix was the kind of music that I knew inside-out, and love. Anyway, a few weeks ago, he released a follow-up to his original mix.

I've been playing around with my DJ Mixes page on my main site a bit lately, trying to tidy it up and provide better info. Some people are probably curious about track listings for some mixes, and other than the Subterranean Homesick Grooves radio shows, track listing info is generally almost impossible to find for some of my older stuff. So to fix that, I'm in the process of digging up track listings for everything that isn't already available, and publishing them here in my blog so they can be found more easily.

This is an old mix that I recorded during a massive snowstorm in the Maritimes in 2004. At the time, I'm not sure what I was thinking, but I wrote this about the mix: "The machine will play almost anything electronica, from trance, to progressive, to techno. Created during 'The White Juan,' Halifax's greatest winter storm in recorded history, this CD at first seems to be dark and oppressive. Listen carefully though, and you may instead decide that the mix is purposely restrained, steady, and calculating. Whether the music is new or old, the beat goes on..."

I'm almost finished posting all the archived sets that I have from live shows now. This will be the second last. It's from when I played at Velours in Tokyo about four years ago.

Velours was an incredible venue. It was fairly small with a capacity of about 200-250 people (actually, not that small by Japanese standards). However, it was very, very nice inside, with chandeliers and a very upscale clientele.

Although I was initially going to do a CD-based set of newer music, once I got inside and saw the clientele, I realized that they would respond just as positively to slightly older music, so I played a set of pure vinyl. You may recognize quite a few of these tracks as being ones I played in other live shows during that time period. However, the equipment in the DJ booth was great, there was a sound engineer to help me out, and the set went very smoothly - probably one of my best live sets ever (to that point), despite not being completely new music.

You can download a copy of this set now. At the time, I broke it up into two halves, because I felt that more people burned the sets onto CD's and listened to them that way. My how things have changed in the past few years. Anyway, here are the download links:

When I was booked for this show, the promoter was a guy named Dave Twomey. I checked out his background, and it turned out that he was an incredible DJ himself. It was a very cool night, and I was glad not just to have played, but also to have met him. A very talented and generous guy.

Anyway, last year, Dave was diagnosed with cancer. He's got a blog online right now which talks about his progress and fundraising, and it has recently seen a huge swell in popularity. I've been playing around with my DJ Mixes page on my main site a bit lately, trying to tidy it up and provide better info. Some people are probably curious about track listings for some mixes, and other than the Subterranean Homesick Grooves radio shows, track listing info is generally almost impossible to find for some of my older stuff. So to fix that, I'm in the process of digging up track listings for everything that isn't already available, and publishing them here in my blog so they can be found more easily.

Today, I'm publishing info on two of my oldest (and favorite) mixes. These are a real blast from the past for me, as it's been almost ten years since I recorded them! The mixing is a little rough in places. They are (like all my early mixes) 100% vinyl, mixed on two decks. Listening to these again brings back some good memories. Enjoy ...

Sampling in Music - Creativity or Lack Thereof?

One of the more contentious areas of argument in the modern music industry is the ethics behind the use of sampling in the creation of new music. Some people argue that it proves or enhances creativity. Others say that it is just theft, and is used by artists who aren't creative enough to come up with their own original works.

Basically, for those who don't understand sampling, it is when someone takes a piece of an existing song and uses it in (or as the entire basis for) another song. The sample can be simple, like two or three notes or chords, or it can be more complex, consisting of a full bassline or a more complicated chord set of chord structures. Sometimes the artist will copy the exact sound from the old song, and other times they'll just create a very similar replication of their own.

I'm going to give you a few examples, and I'll start with one that probably very few people are aware of. Listen to the first few seconds of each of these two songs. One is the very well-known "Paper Planes" by MIA from just a couple years ago. The other is an old song called "Straight To Hell" by The Clash, which I listened to a lot when I was younger:

House music and Hip Hop are probably the two genres which rely most heavily on the use of sampling. Interestingly, in an evolutionary sense, house and hip hop are very closely related genres, although most people wouldn't expect that. I won't get into that discussion, but suffice it to say that they both evolved from very similar origins, just like chimpanzees and humans shared common ancestors.

I first became acquainted with the use of sampling when I was just a kid. My parents had a lot of old 45 records from the 50's and 60's, and I used to listen to them constantly and watch shows like "Name That Tune" on TV. One of the records was a novelty production called "The Flying Saucer," by Buchanan & Goodman. They experimented with a story of a UFO that landed on earth, and pretended they were doing a newscast of the event, but threw in clips from eighteen other popular 50's songs as part of the story (yes, they eventually got sued). It's pretty odd, but as a kid, I thought it was pretty fascinating:

Anyway, I'm going to show you five other pairs of songs where the first song uses samples from the second. Most are really obvious. The last one is far less obvious (it's in the bass line). See if you can figure out the samples used.

"Ice Ice Baby" (Vanilla Ice) samples "Under Pressure" (Queen)

"Rapper's Delight" (Sugarhill Gang) samples "Good Times" (Chic)

"I'll Be Missing You" (Puffy) samples "Every Breath You Take" (Police)

"Barbara Streisand" (Duck Sauce) samples "Hallo Bimmelbahn" (Nighttrain)

"Rhythm Nation" (Janet Jackson) samples "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" (Sly and the Family Stone)

As I said, this last one is pretty tough to notice if you're not looking for it specifically. Some artists will manipulate a sample heavily in order to try to change it significantly before they recycle it, either though the use of tempo changes, pitch changes, effects processing, or a combination of all of the above.

That's all for now, but at some point in the future, I think I'll probably make another post with some comparisons of some really subtle samples.

The Making of The Prodigy's "Smack My Bitch Up"

The Prodigy released a song in 1997 entitled, "Smack My Bitch Up." Last year, the Performing Rights Society (which is the UK's version of SOCAN in Canada, or of the RIAA in the United States), voted the song as the most controversial song of all time.

The lyrical content is obviously contentious. The only lyrics in the song are, "Change my pitch up, smack my bitch up." They come from a sample of a rap song called, "Give The Drummer Some," by the Ultramagnetic MC's (from the late 1980's). A lot of people have obviously criticized the Prodigy's song, interpreting the lyrics as being highly misogynistic. Many radio stations around the world would only play an instrumental version of the song, and often just called the song, "The Prodigy" or "Smack."

The video is even more controversial. It depicts someone on a bender in an urban landscape, and includes drinking and driving, cocaine and heroin use, violence, vandalism, a hit & run, nudity and sex. MTV voted it as the most controversial video in their history, and despite floods of viewer requests to play it, the entire video wasn't played until many years after its release. The interesting thing about the video is that it is all filmed in the first-person perspective, but in a twist at the very end, it is revealed that the person at the center of all the action is a female.

Anyway, the point of this blog post wasn't to talk about the song, so bear with me for another couple minutes. I just figured that some background info would be good. However, I actually want to focus on the production of the track. There are seven different songs which were sampled in the making of the song:

4. Randy Weston, "In Memory Of"
5. Rage Against The Machine, "Bulls On Parade"

Most of these tracks were sampled outright, except for "Nana." The original version of the track used a sample, but subsequent releases had that part sung by Shahin Badar due to legal issues.

Anyway, this is where things get interesting. Jim Pavloff put together a YouTube video showing how to recreate the song using the Ableton Live software. People who aren't familiar with electronic music production will probably be fascinated with how sounds can be altered in the quest to create new music. A very large amount of modern music uses various techniques of sampling older music. Some people don't think highly of this practice, because they believe that it isn't as creative. Others feel that creativity is enhanced. I figure that people should recycle plastic and paper and other similar items, so I don't understand why some people get so passionate about the debate over recycling older music. Anyway, I digress. The point of this whole post is that experienced music producers who haven't seen this "Making Of" video before should find it really interesting. It helps if you are familiar with the Ableton software (if you're watching this for educational purposes), but you don't really need to understand the software to appreciate what's happening.

I find this video to be especially interesting because the techniques used to create the song appear to be very complex, but actually, it was quite simple to create.

SHG Radio Show, Episode 074

Welcome to this week's edition of Subterranean Homesick Grooves™, a weekly electronica-based radio show presented on CHMA FM 106.9 at Mount Allison University in Atlantic Canada, and also distributed as a global podcast through iTunes and numerous other sites. The show is normally programmed and mixed by Jonathan Clark (as DJ Bolivia), although some weeks feature guest mixes by other Canadian DJ's. The show encompasses many sub-genres within the realm of electronic dance music, but the main focus is definitely on progressive and tribal house, and a small amount of trance & techno. Sean Keating Wins John Digweed's "Structures" Contest

A good friend of mine from Halifax, who is also a music producer and one of Canada's top progressive house DJ's, has just won the "Structures" contest sponsored by John Digweed. Essentially, the entrants had to put together a short (thirty minute) mix, which was to be reviewed by a group of very prestigious judges, including Digweed himself, plus Oliver Lieb, Nick Muir, Gavin Kingsley (King Unique), Robert Babicz. Anyone who has followed the scene for the past decade and a half knows that these are some really heavy hitters. Mind you, Sean has been one of Canada's top progressive house DJ's for over a decade, in my opinion.

As a result of winning the contest, Sean's mix (probably expanded to a full hour) will be featured on the Transitions show on August 26th. As a side bonus, Sean also gets a copy of Ableton Live 8 Suite along with Novation’s Launchpad & ZeRO SLMKII combo.

I've featured quite a few of Sean's mixes on my own site, over the years. With the change in my server/hosting back in June, I ended up removing all of the mixes by DJ's other than myself. One of the best things about all these mixes is that they were all done several years ago. Nowadays, almost anyone can make a good-sounding mix by using programs like Virtual DJ or Ableton Live. But it takes talent to record a mix live in the studio using only turntables or maybe pitch-controlled CD players. And almost all of these mixes were done on vinyl, with just a little bit of CD mixing on a couple of the most recent mixes.

I'm not sure which is my favorite, because there are so many that I have listened to dozens of times. I often recommend "Trippin' The Drum Fantastic" as a starter mix, and a few of my friends often recommend SYSS v4 as a more mainstream popular mix, but that doesn't necessarily mean that either of those two are the best. Also, I'm missing versions 3 and 7 of the SYSS series. If anyone has either of them, I'd really appreciate it if you could send me a copy using YouSendIt or a similar service. Welcome to this week's edition of Subterranean Homesick Grooves™, a weekly electronica-based radio show presented on CHMA FM 106.9 at Mount Allison University in Atlantic Canada, and also distributed as a global podcast through iTunes and numerous other sites. The show is normally programmed and mixed by Jonathan Clark (as DJ Bolivia), although some weeks feature guest mixes by other Canadian DJ's. The show encompasses many sub-genres within the realm of electronic dance music, but the main focus is definitely on progressive and tribal house, and a small amount of trance & techno.
