Bolivia's "Atlantic Provinces" Mix Series

As I'm travelling across Canada, I'm trying to find time to catch up on a few more things on my website's "To Do" list, when I'm not actually behind the wheel. Here are archival links to three more of my older mixes from the end of 2006.

These mixes were an effort to use a bunch of old vinyl progressive house tracks that I had always liked, but had never managed to include in other regular mixes. The first one was used as an exclusive mix for a web collective (the now-defunct Lyrical Smelter) in Newfoundland who had asked me to put together a mix for their site, so I simply called it "Newfoundland." Since I wasn't feeling particularly creative, when I got to the next couple mixes, I just named them after other Atlantic Canadian provinces. But then I stopped before I got to the final mix (Prince Edward Island) of the planned four-mix series, so only three ever got completed. But at least I used up all of the vinyl tracks that I had set aside.

My older "Music To Code By" series had a lot of vocals in the tracks. These mixes had far fewer vocals. These are generally deeper and darker tracks than I had usually used in shows or studio mixes in the past.

Music To Code By, volumes 1-3

Several years ago, I noticed that a lot of traffic was being driven to my website by Microsoft blogger Dan Fernandez. He had a very active blog back from about 2003-2006 (and still updates it occasionally), and in one post, he mentioned that he was listening to one of my DJ mixes while doing some coding work. Once I saw that, I actually contacted him (since I was a computer science student back in the days of punch-cards and 8-bit assembly, and even now I still code my websites by hand in a text editor, which is admittedly lame). We've corresponded frequently over the years.

Anyway, he commented that the type of music I played was pretty good to have as background music for computer "programming" work, because it was high energy and didn't have a lot of vocals, so it wasn't distracting for someone who was trying to concentrate on something intellectual. I decided to do a series of mixes called "Music To Code By." These mixes became pretty popular on the internet, and indirectly ended up being the reason that I've become friends with a number of people over the years, and they have therefore really shaped my lifestyle and DJ career over time. They also led to things like my first big show (GDC in San Jose back in 2006), my involvement with the DefCon Hacker's Conferences (through tProphet, who discovered me through these mixes), and my trip to Antarctica (again, through Pinguino & friends, hacker-related).

Although the mixes have always been available from the mix page on my main website, they've become buried in a flood of other music lately, and the track listings associated with the mixes have also disappeared from the website. As a result, I've decided to repost them here in my blog, so people doing Google searches can find the track listings again. So here are links once again to the first three of the six mixes in the series, along with track listings. I'll dig up track listings for the second half of the series next week and post them too.

All of these mixes were done "live" with vinyl on turntables. Ah, the "good old days." Click here to view the post about volumes 4-6 of this series.

SHG Radio Show Episode 055

Welcome to this week's edition of Subterranean Homesick Grooves™, a weekly electronica-based radio show presented on CHMA FM 106.9 at Mount Allison University in Atlantic Canada, and also distributed as a global podcast through iTunes and numerous other sites. The show is normally programmed and mixed by Jonathan Clark (as DJ Bolivia), although some weeks feature guest mixes by other Canadian DJ's. The show encompasses many sub-genres within the realm of electronic dance music, but the main focus is definitely on progressive and tribal house, and a very small amount of trance & techno. Liner notes for this episode (055) can be seen below.

Para la información en español, vaya aquí.

Here’s a link so you can listen to the show or download it from SoundCloud:

In addition to being able to download each episode from SoundCloud, you can also visit our DJ Mixes folder on Dropbox (which allows for bulk downloads).  That folder hosts hundreds of episodes and other DJ mixes.  Here's the link:

And of course, you can download Bolivia's individual tracks from this link:

Here are Track Listings for episode 055:

01. STJ feat. Kristin Callahan, "Around My Head" (Silt Deep Remix).
02. Pi 314 & Rocio Ross, "My Future" (Woody Iglesias Remix).
03. Dark Providers, "Neo" (Teramik Dub).
04. DJ Casa Grande, "We Wumae" (Original Mix).
05. Neftali Blasko & Demian Moreno, "Visions" (Rodrigo Cortazar Remix).
06. Demian & Sebastian, "Iron Man" (Original Mix).
07. Van Lo, "Infuse" (3AM Dub).
08. Tony Dee, "Promise Land" (Original Mix).
09. Room 24, "No Rain" (Chris Reece & Josh Green Collab Mix).

This show is particularly diverse, compared to many of the last half dozen or so. You'll hear a journey from deep house to tech-house to a sort of techy-techno (I'm sure that I'm the only person in the world who understands what I just tried to describe). And then a bit of energetic traditional house and some upbeat progressive house at the end. Sort of. To be honest, this show is especially hard to describe.

Here are links to either personal websites, MySpace pages, or SoundCloud pages for a few of the original artists and remixers/producers listed above:

STJ (Austria)
PI 314 (Spain)
Dark Providers (Spain?)
Neftali Blasko (Mexico)
Demian Moreno (Argentina)
Rodrigo Cortazar (Mexico)
Van Lo (United States)
Tony Dee (Italy)
Chris Reece (Switzerland)

If you're a producer who is interested in submitting music for possible inclusion on future episodes of SHG, visit DJ Bolivia's SoundCloud dropbox. Please note that not all submitted mixes will be played on the show. If you have a track that fits the format (progressive and/or tech-house), then your chances of having the track featured will increase.

Mix: Bolivia, "Live at the Evolve Festival, 2004-08-28"

This is actually an older mix that I'm posting today. It's already been online on my website for several years, and the only reason I'm posting it again right now is because I've had a couple requests recently from people who have said that it's one of the best sets that I've ever played, and I should feature it again. I don't entirely agree that it's one of my best, but I definitely enjoy listening to it now and again.

Unlike some shows, I remember this set extremely well. The one thing that really stood out for me was that it was the first time I saw Sonny D (a DJ/producer and friend of mine) dancing to a set. Now this is not actually that strange, but for some reason, a lot of DJ's tend to hang out more backstage and listen to the music and judge the technical mixing skills, instead of just getting out on the dance floor and really enjoying the show. So I was pretty happy to have Sonny dancing during my set - I took that as quite a compliment. By the way, for anyone who is in Halifax on April 23rd of this month, Sonny is opening for Tiesto at the Cunard Center.

By the way, the Evolve Festival is held every late July or early August in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. A couple of my friends are the organizers, and I was really happy to see that in a national CBC poll a few months ago, Evolve was voted as Canada's best music festival (out of almost a hundred festivals that were in the running). No matter where you live, you should check it out. People travel from all over the world to attend. Here's a link to their website:

http://www.evolvefestival.com

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to play at Evolve since 2005, because they moved the date earlier in the summer and it conflicts with my summer job (it used to be held in late August). But hopefully, in a couple more years, I'll be retired from the tree planting industry and I'll be able to start playing at Evolve again.
